Doc Kelley (Albert James Kelley) was born on March 1, 1902 in Chicago, Illinois. After going to high school at Central (Superior, WI), Kelley attended Northwestern University. Kelley made his professional debut in the NFL in 1924 with the Duluth Kelleys. He played for the Duluth Kelleys and Duluth Eskimos over the course of his 3 year career.
