Ewell Doak Walker, born on January 1, 1927 in Dallas, Texas, played six extremely successful seasons as a running back for the NFL's Detroit Lions. He was also a Heisman Trophy winner in 1948.

Walker attended Southern Methodist University where he was a running back, defensive back, and kicker for the Mustang football team. He was an All-American as a football player, while also playing for the SMU baseball and basketball teams.

He was drafted by the Lions with the No. 3 pick in the 1949 NFL Draft and reunited with former high school teammate Bobby Layne, who was the Lions' quarterback. In his six seasons, Walker helped the Lions win two NFL Championships. He was also named an All-Pro four times and is now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He is now immortalized by the annual Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation's best collegiate running back, and by a statue in front of SMU's Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports.

Doak Walker (Ewell Doak Walker) was born on January 1, 1927 in Dallas, Texas. After going to high school at Highland Park (Dallas, TX), Walker attended Southern Methodist University. Walker made his professional debut in the NFL in 1950 with the Detroit Lions. He played for the Detroit Lions for his entire 6 year career.

Most people believe that 1950 was Doak Walker's best year, as he ran in 5 TDs, hauled in 35 receptions, had 534 receiving yards and caught 6 TD passes.
