Discuss Amongst Yourselves: Reaching the Homer Plateaus (in 2007)

by user Manny Stiles

Sure there's this Barry guy possibly surpassing a career mark....

There are currently FOUR players within shouting distance of the formerly illustrious 500 career Home Runs plateau.

Coming into the 2007 season, Frank Thomas (487), Jim Thome (472), Manny Ramirez (470) and Alex Rodriguez (464) are all within logical shouting distance.

Will we see FOUR 500th Homers this season?

ALL in the American League and NONE coming against the Devil Rays?

WHO will cross the plane first?

And who will end up with the MOST when it's all said and done?

Can Sammy Sosa get to 600?

I say A-Rod gets #500 first, Thome ends the season at 499, Barry breaks the record in September and Sosa gets #600 sometime this year, too.

Thome is going to break the barrier and retire at the end of the year. Mark it down.

I think Thomas gets there first, but all of them do it this year. Manny's will come against the Devil Rays. :) Bonds will definitely do it, but it will end up being sooner rather than later to everyone's chagrin. How many does Sosa need for 600?

Thomas, ARod, and Manny will all get it this season. I think the injuries are going to come back to bite Thome, so he'll fall short.

Also, Sheffield is at 455, so he isn't too far off. I don't think he'll get it, but he's close.

Sosa will NOT get 600.

And Bonds will get the record at the end of July.

Thomas, A-Rod and Ramirez, in that order, will get their 500th HR this year. I don't see Thome getting it. His numbers dropped off during the second half of last year, and he was simply a DH. His best days are long over. Sosa may get 600, depending on whether or not he can keep his supply going....

Yeah, but once his supply runs out, he'll just cork his ba . . . I mean "accidentally" use a batting practice bat to get the final few.

I think they all get it. Thomas, A-Rod, then Manny and Thome on the same day.

hopefully a day when the Red Sox play the White Sox and the Blue Jays play the Yankees? They could all do it in the same inning, that would be cool!

Griffey Jr. needs 37 for 600. I think Thomas and ARod are locks, the other two guys are going to miss time due to injury and whether they make it or not depends on how much time they do miss. Holding a gun to my head, I would say they both get there this year.

I saw Sammy in Spring Training and he looked awful at the plate, he needs, what, a dozen? I say he gets there but not by much.

Barry does not break Aaron's record. Not this year, not in his lifetime.

Then Bonds will get it after he dies... somehow, Bonds is breaking that record.

The guys at Retrosheets have boxscores of "lost" games JUST WAITING TO "fix" Bonds...

It won't take long to tell if Sammy Sosa was hitting so well because of batting so often against rookies and over the hill veterans the first time he faces pitchers like Rich Harden and Johan Santana in the regular season.

do we know that he's made the team for sure yet?

Me thinks it would be close to the same as when he faced those type of pitchers last time.

Then again, I was pretty surprised he was as washed up as he looked with the Orioles. Who knows?

unless he has some major breakdown, he'll make the team. I think all 6 of them break their barrier

Sammy made the team about a week and a half ago. News doesn't travel very fast up north, does it? I've got a $50 bet with my neighbor Sammy gets released before the All-Star break. No steriods, no bat speed, no need to be on a major league roster.
