Devil Rays Make 3 Trades in 2 Days

Pitcher Seth McClung to the Milwaukee Brewers for pitcher Grant Balfour. (Pointless)

Second Baseman Jorge Cantu and outfielder Shawn Cumberland to the Cincinnati Reds for pitcher Brian Shackelford and pitcher Calvin Medlock. In my opinion, bad trade on the Devil Rays' part.

Last, and the biggest out of the 3, Ty Wigginton to the Houston Astros for pitcher Dan Wheeler. The Devil Rays really need some pitching in the bullpen, so I guess this is a good trade for them. Wigginton was pretty average in my opinion, but is a good utility guy, which is good for the Astros to get, I guess.

Any thoughts about these trades?

Cantu wanted out anyway. McClung for Balfour is like trading a dollar bill for four quarters. (SSDD) I hate Wigginton so I'm glad he is gone Wheeler is alright but overrated in my opinion. Shackelford has some talent. I do not know anything about Medlock.

Do you hate Wiggy because he looks like he's pissed off all the time or because you know a GOOD team wouldn't need production from a guy like him?

AS a Rays fan - I love the trades.

To get rid of pieces you didn't need to get parts you did is always a good thing. PLUS they didn't trade guys I like!

Wigginton is an OK player (on a team that doesn't need him to be a leader). He wasn't a long term solution in Tampa. He is loved by the long-time fans but so was Steve Cox, Aubrey Huff and Travis Lee...

Cantu was maligned and an unneeded part. Addition by subtraction.

Andrew Friedman is getting paid to do the right things for the organization. I think he's doing pretty good - all things considered. The Rays have been struggling lately and Stu Sternberg isn't going to sit around and let the travesty continue.

Getting rid of Wiggy, Cantu and McClung helps rid the old culture too. They are changing things in Tampa (pay attention and you won't wonder why they're SO GOOD in 2 years!)

Despite their record, The Rays aren't the worst team in baseball!

Look for Wheeler to excel under his old pitching coach jim Hickey. (I'm surprised they didn't get Lidge)

They need BULLPEN help - see: tonight's game vs. the Red Sox.

Now... if they could just pick up a stud veteran, leadership oriented catcher (a la Pudge with the Marlins) and a pitcher or two, get the young guys up and STAY HEALTHY... next year they could be a dominant force in the AL EAST. Three years from now, they WILL be a force in the AL EAST. Start worrying now!

I think getting Wheeler was a major plus for them. Yeah, I was wondering, if they got Wheeler, why didn't they go for Lidge instead? I was actually getting worried about tonight's game with the Red Sox and TBDRs. I like teams that get a lot of trades, cuz then they get acquainted with a lot of players, and if you trade them in the next couple of years, you will be able to see what is good and bad about them, and you'll be able to make even better trades.

Wheeler could have helped tonight.

Rays Fan rule #1 - Cheer until the sixth inning is over and cry after that...

Yeah, I know. I heard the Gomes home run that tied the game. It was Papelbon's second blown save. It sounded like 20 guys cheering regularly...

the stadium has good acoustics with the slanted roof and all... there were only 8 guys cheering!

McClung trade shouldn't be dignified with words. It has no future major league impact. Cantu and Wiggington trades were smart, necessary moves. Cantu's time had undoubtedly come to an end. With Brignac and Longoria on the way, there’s no room for Cantu or Wiggington in an already packed Tampa infield. Despite Cantu’s previous RBI production, I see him as no more than a utility man in the future who can provide occasional pop. Dan Wheeler provides some sense of bullpen security (relatively of course) and, if necessary can be spun in another subsequent deal (or can open the door for Al “Lights Out” Reyes to be moved). Medlock has pitched very respectably before hitting a bump in AAA. He may be able to provide some relief for a struggling bullpen next year. Overall, good work by TB by recognizing their surplus of infielders and spinning it to acquire current and future bullpen help.

I agree. The Wiggington trade will mean another one -- Wheeler is going to be moved again. He serves no purpose on TB right now, with Reyes and others there. Wheeler can probably fetch a decent prospect right now, sad as it is.

Well, Ty Wigginton did pretty good for his Astros Debut: 2-5, run scored in a 18-11 loss against the San Diego Padres.
