[edit] Biography

Born on January 25, 1978 in Union City, Tennessee, Derrick Turnbow (Thomas Derrick Turnbow) played for the Anaheim Angels and Milwaukee Brewers over the course of his 5 year career. Turnbow broke into the bigs on April 17, 2000 with the Anaheim Angels, and put up a 1.74 ERA in 67.1 innings pitched in 2005, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Derrick Turnbow's best season was 2005, when he posted a 1.74 ERA, notched 39 saves and struck out 64 batters.

In October 2003, Turnbow became the first major league player to test positive for a banned steroid. He did not face sanctions from Major League Baseball, because they did not begin penalizing steroid use until the 2004 season. He was banned for two years from international competition.

Turnbow was also one of the players named in baseball's Mitchell report. The extent of his exposure in this report was the rehashing of his 2003 positive test for a banned steroid, which was not banned by MLB until 2004.

Turnbow played baseball at Franklin High School and compiled a 30-4 record over four years. His senior year he posted a Franklin High single season best 0.77 ERA. The school retired Turnbow's number (20) in 2001 and he is currently the only baseball player to have been awarded said honor. He was drafted in 1998 by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 5th round of the MLB Draft.

He throws 96-98 mph fastballs regularly for Milwaukee.

Claimed off waivers by Milwaukee following the 2004 season, Turnbow became the Brewers closer in April, 2005. He finished the 2005 season with 39 saves, matching the team record set previously by Danny Kolb in 2004. In 2005, Turnbow also set personal bests with an Earned Run Average of 1.74, a 7-1 record, 69 appearances, and 67.1 innings pitched.

Derrick Turnbow recently got a new, three-year contract which is guaranteed $6.5 million over the course of the deal, which runs through 2008 and "buys out" his first two seasons of arbitration eligibility. Turnbow had already signed a one-year, $488,000 contract for 2006, but that was folded into his new deal. The Brewers will pay a $512,000 signing bonus that essentially boosts Turnbow's 2006 salary to $1 million, and he will earn base salaries of $2.3 million in 2007 and $3.2 million in 2008.

In April 2006, Turnbow became the first relief pitcher ever to earn a save in each of the first 4 games of the season.

Turnbow's long hair, great attitude, and amazing fastball all have contributed to making him a fan favorite in Milwaukee. His current entrance music is "Fuel" by Metallica.
