Dennis was hard body checking defenseman for the Penguins and Colorado Rockies. His first game was October 12, 1974 as the Penguins faced the Detroit Red Wings. In that first game he had two assists
Dennis was a victim of high-sticking incident on Oct. 20, 1976, that led to assault charges against Toronto's Dave "Tiger" Williams, who was acquitted.
Missed part of 1976-77 season with torn knee ligaments, a season-ending injury which he suffered in a collision with Boston's Mike Milbury on Jan. 30, 1977, in Pittsburgh.
