After a three day meeting between the major sanctioning bodies of Stock Car Racing in Daytona Beach, Florida the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing better known as NASCAR is founded. The driving force behind the merger is Stock car driver and promoter Bill France, who helped iron out the differences in rules.

- The University of Toledo defeats the University of Nevada, 40-37, in the Las Vegas Bowl in what is college football's first ever overtime game in Division I-A history. The NCAA adopts an overtime rule the following year for regular season games.
