Dear NFL Rules Committee: Stop Pampering Quarterbacks

There is a problem in the NFL, and it is the roughing the passer rule. Now, defenders are flagged for a 15 yard penalty and a first down just for hitting the Quarterback. I, myself, and a Strongside Linebacker on my High school team, and I know that when you start going after the Quarterback, you can't successfully do the job if you have to worry about being flagged as soon as you touch them. Lets examine the rule.

If you vist this page, which explains the rules about Quarterbacks, you read that if the referee believes thatthe defender "...had a reasonable chance to stop themselves..." then it is a penalty, but what does this mean? This rule has been used against a Minnesota Vikings Defensive End who was fined $5,000 for a late hit. I watched this game, and the play in question was a normal hit that was started during the throwing motion, yet it is still called. Quarterbacks are treated as if they can't be hit at all, as seen in the Giants-Titans game.

Now, you ask what should be done? I say that the rule about no hits below the knee should stand. It is a safety rule that is necessary. But what needs to be changed is that defenders need to be able to hit the Quarterbacks. They are not in any way more important or more special than any other player. I was listening to the Sludge & Lake show, the night show for the Minnesota ESPN radio affiliate flagship station, and they brought up the point that Players like Steve Young, Joe Montana, and Brett Favre would have had, or would have longer careers if they had this type of protection, especially in the case of Young. Quarterbacks all ready get to break in their own balls to use for each game, they don't need even more pampering. So please NFL, stop the pampering.

I agree, with the new QB protection rules are horrible. Currently a defensive player only has about a two foot area to hit a QB in. They might as well put red jerseys on QB's and let them play 7 on 7 drills.

What needs to be changed is an addition of a "Running into the Quarterback" rule. Similar to running into the punter. Make it only a 5 yard penalty that might or might not result in a first down, I'm undecided on this one. 15 yards is far to much for an incidental collision.

Definitly agree with that. There should be qualifications of roughing the passer if they insist on having these horrible, rules.

QBs have much longer careers than RBs. No-one is rushing to protect them. At the end of the day, the idea is to tackle the QB (if you're a LB), so if that is what you were trying to do, then fine. If you were deliberately late, then fair enough. This could turn it into football (soccer), whereby QBs take a dive in order to get a 1st Down when they really need to.

but the runningback position is very abusive on a body. They smash through the line ~20 times a game, for 16+ games, for 10 years and then they quit because their body is quaking in pain from the abuse it's taken. Rb's can't be protected in a similar way because then there would be no point of ever throwing the ball, when hitting the RB at an inoppertune(sp?) time results in a penalty

What bothers me is not just the rule about when you hit the QB, but now there are rules about HOW you hit the QB. If you tackle the QB too hard yiu get a penalty. it is obscene. However, it is a result of the contracts that professional athletes make today. When an owner shells out millions if dollars for a 7 year contract for his QB, he wants to protect his investment. That is all this is about.
