Deacon White (James Laurie White) was born on December 7, 1847 in Caton, New York. He made his Major League debut on May 4, 1871 for the Cleveland Forest Citys. In 1871, his rookie year, he hit .322 with 1 home run and 21 RBI. White played for the Cleveland Forest Citys, Boston Red Stockings, Chicago White Stockings, Boston Red Caps, Cincinnati Reds, Buffalo Bisons, Detroit Wolverines and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 20 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Deacon White's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1888, when he hit for a .298 average and knocked in 71 runs. However, others believe that it was 1887, when he hit for a .303 average and knocked in 75 runs.
