Well, it's official: Week One of the 2006 NFL Season is finally in the books. And since some of my fellow users have already offered very good summaries of the game action, I thought I'd write something different -- a post each week highlighting the best performances of the previous week, and the season so far.

The method I'll be using is based on something called Adjusted Yards, a system created by Sean Lahman and introduced in the 2006 ESPN Pro Football Encyclopedia. The method simply adds together a player's yards, with various incentives for touchdowns (and penalties for interceptions). Here's the formula:

Total Adj. Yards = Rush Yds + 10*Rush TD + (Pass Yds/2) + 5*Pass TD - 40*Int + (Rec Yds/2) + 5*Rec TD

Note that passers and receivers split credit on each pass play. From here, I go even further, converting TAY into Points Produced:

Net Points = TAY/12

"'Soft tosser'? I got your 'soft tosser' right here!"

Because it takes about 12 yards of offense to put a point up on the scoreboard. Then I divide Net Points by each player's number of Adjusted Plays...

Adj. Plays = (Pass Att/2) + Rush Att + (Receptions/2)

Pts/Play = Net Points / Adj. Plays

...And then calculate Points Above Replacement thusly:

PAR = (Pts/Play - .233) * Adj. Plays

Because .233 Pts/play (which comes out to be somewhere around 14 pts/game) is just about as low as an NFL offense can get away with before the entire offensive coaching staff gets banned from football forever. PAR/G is simply the number of Pts Above Replacement the player puts up per game, and WARP (Wins Above Replacement Player) plays on the idea that roughly 40 net points gets you a win in the NFL:

WARP = PAR/40

Sadly, no. I didn't have thrown-to data, but I'm not sure I would want to incorporate that anyway, unless it included dropped passes. One problem I have with the Football Outsiders' DVOA for receivers is the way it punishes guys with low catch %'s, even though we don't know from the play-by-play whether an incomplete pass targeted for the player was dropped (which he definitely should be punished for) or whether the QB made a bad throw in his general vicinity (totally not the receiver's fault). The only people I know of who track drops are STATS Inc. and Elias, and you know they aren't giving the data away.

10-0? That's an awfully optimistic prediction, considering they still have to go through Michigan State and Rutgers, not to mention a Syracuse team that just played really tough against Iowa. Syracuse isn't good, but they're just good enough to pull an upset at some point this season. Who's to say it won't be Pitt? If they actually go 10-0, by all means, put them that high. But to look at their performance thus far and say AT THIS POINT that they're better than those three other teams is ludicrous. IF they get to 10-0, I'll concede that they're deserving of that ranking. But I saw them against Cincy, and they're just not that good a team.

Then again, if the method includes incomplete passes as "plays" for QB's, it ought to do the same for receivers, regardless of drops or poor throws, or else it wouldn't be fair to QB's... Of course, this is all moot until I find data on times targeted. Also, even if I found that data, the new results would no longer be compatible with historical stats (good luck finding thrown-to numbers for the 1977 Raiders, for instance).

You can find "thrown-to" data by going through the play-by-plays, and for a while, either CBS Sportsline or Fox Sports had it (don't remember which). FO may make gamecharts available, too.

My gut is that 2pt runs get +2 added to Net Points, and 2pt passes are split up +1 and +1, passer & reciever. But I'm not going to worry about that until I get the kicking and punting games ironed out -- which could take a while...
