Davis21wylie's Week 15/16 NFL Bonanza!

Ah, can you feel it? Christmas is just a few days away, and I don't know about you, but I'm excited! The mistletoe, the eggnog... and the fact that these final few weeks of the NFL season are shaping up to be one of the most thrilling finishes ever (18 teams are in the playoff hunt) -- it's the National Football League's very own gift to you! Thank God football lives and lives forever! My gift for you, loyal readers, is much humbler, of course. As you all know, I haven't been able to do player rankings since Week 9 because of school. Finally, though, your patience with me has been rewarded, as I come bearing a Leonard Davis-sized NFL article, designed to bring a merry Christmas to readers young and old. Yes, Virginia, there is a LaDainian Tomlinson!!

Plays are the number of opportunities the player consumes. Rushes count as a full play, while passes and receptions are worth half a play each.

TAY stands for Total Adjusted Yards, an attempt to scale all players' yards equally.

Net Points is an estimate of the number of points the player produced through his passes, rushes, and receptions. It is equal to TAY / 12.

Pts/Play is the number of points the player produced per play consumed.

PAR means Points Above Replacement; it's a rough estimate of the number of extra points the player produced over what a random minimum-wage free agent would have if given the same opportunity.

PAR/G is the average number of points above replacement the player puts up per game.

WARP stands for Wins Above Replacement Player, and is the theoretical number of wins the player has added to his team over that which a random waiver-wire player would produce.

Leading off are the player rankings. Since I last crunched these numbers, many changes have taken place across the NFL. Regrettably, Donovan McNabb, who had been bringing joy to the hearts of Eagles fans everywhere (and anyone who enjoys seeing a great QB take care of his business, for that matter), went down with an ACL injury, bringing his fantastic year to a premature finish. But even in his absence, the league is not lacking for great performances... The greatest of them all has been Tomlinson, whose record-breaking forays into the end zone have vaulted him into first place in the player rankings. In fact, at 103.16 PAR through 14 games, LT is on pace to break the all-time record for most PAR by a running back under my system -- formerly held by Barry Sanders, who threw down 112.99 PAR in 1997. Tomlinson will probably not play in Week 17 if San Diego clinches home-field this week, but if he does end up playing all 16 games, he will almost certainly set a new benchmark for PAR greatness. Other outstanding ballcarriers this year have been San Francisco's Frank Gore, who checks in at second among RB's, and the always-terrific Larry Johnson of Kansas City. Philly's Brian Westbrook was snubbed for the Pro Bowl this year, as he ranks ahead of both Tiki Barber and Steven Jackson in PAR, and by a pretty sizable margin.

Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no LaDainian Tomlinson!

While running backs generally dominate the Top 15 in PAR, Tomlinson and Gore are the only ones in the Top 8, meaning that quarterbacks have been particularly good at pulling their weight this year. As usual, the leader of them all is Peyton Manning, who has been absolutely masterful again in 2006 (he's on pace for his second-best season ever, behind only his crazy 2004). Trailing him is Drew Brees, a guy who has reinvigorated the Saints by passing for obscene yardage totals week in and week out (his 1838 TAY is eclipsed only by Tomlinson and Johnson). Surpringly, Michael Vick is also among the QB leaders in PAR, but it makes sense: he's coupling great rushing numbers (he'll post the first 2,000-1,000 season ever) with decent, turnover-free passing to produce .514 Pts/Play. Pro Bowler Marc Bulger still ranks behind McNabb, thanks to some uninspired play since the last time I released the rankings, but he remains a deserving pick for Honolulu. Similarly, Dallas' Tony Romo hasn't played enough for a gaudy PAR, but his .477 Pts/Play is certainly up there with the league's elite QB's, making his selection justifiable.

Among receivers, there are a number of players that still have time to grab the PAR crown. Cincinnati's Chad Johnson leads the way with 47.7 PAR (remember, WR's typically have lower PAR's than QB's and RB's because they touch the ball less), but Denver's dynamic Javon Walker is right on his heels. Colts teammates Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison are each less than 4 PAR off the lead as well, and Donald Driver and Steve Smith are not far behind. These six recievers (all of whom but Walker are going to Honolulu) have shown all season what it takes to be a superstar NFL wideout, and they might be the best single-season crop of pass-catchers ever (although none have a shot at Jerry Rice's all-time single-season PAR record of 66.45).

Week 15's MVP: Tomlinson, who continued his assault on the record books with 204 total yards and 2 TD against KC.

Week 15's Least Valuable Player: Nobody, because I'm too immersed in the Christmas spirit to hand out such a lump of coal.

Let's move on to the team rankings. As usual, here's my explanation of how they are calculated: While I'm still predicting net points with the formula PNP = (Net Yards / 12) + (4 * Net Turnovers), and net wins by pNW = (Games / 2) + (PNP / 40), this method will only comprise 37.5% of my rankings. Since net yards don't take into account punt/kickoff/return yardage, teams with good special teams were being undervalued, so I'm also using the good old pythagorean projection:

pW% = (PF^2.37)/((PF^2.37)+(PA^2.37))

Predicted net wins and % are denoted by pW1 and pW%1, and pythagorean wins and % are denoted by pW2 and pW%2. A new feature over the past couple weeks has been the addition of a strength of schedule component. What I used to call "rating" (the average of pW%1 and pW%2) is now referred to as the "raw" rating, while "SOS" is the cumulative winning % of the team's opponents. "New Rating" is now 75% the old "raw" rating, and 25% SOS. (Again, I'm using NFL.com's SOS data, meaning that it ought to be right.)

After a week away from the top spot, San Diego re-claimed their supremacy in the rankings with a convincing 20-9 win over Kansas City. Baltimore slipped to second place, but more because of how the Chargers played than any wrongdoings on the Ravens' part. Da Bears held steady at #3, while New England passed Jacksonville for fourth after the latter lost to Tennessee. Here's how the full rankings look after Week 15:
