Damon Huard or Trent Green…You Make the Call

Thanks to Herm Edwards, for all of us that didn’t already know, we learned through him that “You play to win the game!” Although he did say that with his days with the Jets, so it’s understandable why he had to point that out. Now in Kansas City, Herm has another question to answer…Far tougher than the one he answered for all of us in New York. In trying to win the game…How does he go about doing it? Seems like an easy and somewhat dumb question to ask, but the answer is far more complex then recognizing a Two-Deep coverage for the quarterback behind center.

Speaking of which, that’s where Herm’s question & dilemma stems from…The quarterback position. After watching his starting quarterback Trent Green do his best Humpty Dumpty impression, (or do I mean Ben Rothliesberger) in week one, while making every bobblehead in America jealous, the Chiefs had no choice but to turn to Damon Huard. Not exactly what you wanted to hear as a Chief fan…The combination of terms of Damon Huard & Kansas City Chief starting quarterback. No offense to Damon…I’m sure he’s every parent(s) wet dream, but at that point in time he was Herm Edward’s nightmare and after coming off the whole Chad Pennington thing just last year!

Well, somehow this nightmare turned into sweet dreams for Herm as Huard has excelled behind center with 11 touchdown passes and only one interception in seven starts. And wow what’d you know…Trent Green is feeling better now, almost ready to put his helmet back on and go play. However, at this point in time does Green give the Chiefs the best chance to win or does Huard? And now it’s about time for me to introduce you to that highly debatable topic once again…”Does a player lose his starting job to injury?” See that’s why Herm gets paid the big bucks…To anwser all the tough questions. I have a hard time deciding between Coke & Pepsi…Never really can, So I just choose water. It’s neutral!

So, “Does a player lose his starting job to injury?” There’s no really clear cut answer to this question…It’s even worse than getting a response from your significant other, “I don’t care”…Followed up by another “I don’t care.” There’s no question Trent Green is a better quarterback than Damon Huard…That’s like trying to compare Tiger & Phil. No comparison, however, I just can’t believe I compared Tiger Woods to Trent Green. Now while Trent has been trying to collect his marbles on the sidelines, Huard’s been winning football games and developing that all important chemistry that teams must establish and have if they want to succeed. There’s no question the Kansas City Chiefs have this now. It has been reported that Green could be back Nov. 19 against Oakland, but that still remains to be seen…Just like Shaun Alexander and his broken foot.

Herm Edwards has gone on record on more than one occasion to iterate and reiterate that when Trent Green is healthy enough, he’ll be behind center and Huard will be sporting a baseball hat and a clipboard…I love the new fall fashions coming out of Kansas City. Um, Hello Herm…don’t “You play to win the game?” How many games has Trent won for you this season? About the same amount as I have sitting here typing this piece…Zero! Edwards was asked if Green would start when he's recovered from a concussion suffered in the opening game. "Yes," the coach said, echoing a sentiment he had expressed numerous times.

“I'm not waffling. What I don't want to talk about (is) a decision I don't have to make in this point in time because that's not important," he said. See, I’m all for doing the honorable thing here and not “waffling”, but I would like to share some advice with you now Hermy, just as you’ve done with us. It’s called…”If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The chemistry that you say, “is very important," why on earth would you want to botch with that? Ever heard this one? “You don’t know what you got until it’s gone”? If Damon goes back to the sidelines, you’ll quickly learn the meaning of that one too! Besides, although Green is a better quarterback, what has he really done to deserve getting back behind center? It’s not like he’s had any momentous accomplishments is this league. Sure he’s steady & able on the football field, but steady doesn’t always win the race. And from what I can tell Trent hasn’t won anything this season, Damon has. After all, you still “Play to win the game,” don’t you Herm? Looks like Huard has caught on to that concept quite nicely…Why don’t you?

Funny how, if Edwards does opt to keep Trent Green on the bench, this wouldn't be the first time. When he was with the Rams, he got hurt, a nobody names Kurt Warner stepped in and the rest is history...

And look how that turned out for the Rams! Really good (1999-2001), and really bad (2002-03).

When you have a QB that has out performed the starter, he deserves the job. Green diddn't do that well when he was on the field, and Huard has been strong, so the job should be his

Green was really good as a starter up until the injury.

The post-Green Rams make for an interesting case study. Set aside the fact that Martz was wholly unwilling to turn the reigns over from Warner to Bulger until he had virtually no choice, and imagine he had made the switch in a timely manner. Would the Rams have been better off, from 1999 on, with Warner/Bulger, or Green? The former by a lot. Warner was all-Universe through 2001, and from 2002 through 2005, Bulger was at least comparable to Green. Now, Bulger is what, 30? Green on the other hand is on his last legs.

Green's career will be extended by the fact that his early career saw him riding the bench and looking for that second chance after his first big injury. He's matured as much as someone who's been in the league as long as him but his body has only taken the general wear of five or six seasons. That plus two injuries do not put him on his last legs.

Normally I'd say put Green back in. If Vermeil were still there, I'd definitely say put Green back in. But, with a new coach and a new system, I'm not entirely convinced that Kansas City isn't ready for a QB change. They killed themselves for years by letting Rich Gannon ride the pine just because Elvis Grbac was a favorite of the front office (married to the owner's neice). Let Huard keep playing.

Another comparison that I just don't get. Grbac was never that great. Green has proven himself for FIVE years. I appreciate how Huard has turned out, but 7 games is hardly the sample size to put Green on the shelf permanently.

The reason I made the comparison is because in two seasons, the Chiefs went back to Grbac when he came back from an injury despite how well Gannon was playing, and they really got hurt by it. That doesn't mean I'm putting Green and Grbac in the same category, because I'm not. Green is definitely better than Grbac ever was. I'm just pointing out that, just as was the case with Grbac, this might be time to change starting quarterbacks. Even though Green was very good under Vermeil, maybe Huard will work better with Edwards' scheme.

Just as with Gannon in those two seasons when Grbac got hurt, I think Huard has played well enough to earn the opportunity to keep his job...for now.

Ride the Huard Bangwagon...Where it stops, nobody knows. Putting Green back in might be the dumbest move Herm would make. If Green goes back in it would be like a couple preseason games for him to get used to everything once again. Trent, there's always next year. You & Preist Holmes...Co-Comeback Players of the Year in 2007.

Green and Warner were a completely different situation that this one. Huard has proved a terrific backup, but Green has done what he's done for five years. I think it would be foolish to not go back to Green when he's ready. That being said, I'm happy they've taken their time with his concussion and I hope the time hasn't caused them to outsmart themselves and overthink it. It's pretty simple.

Fair enough. I really think Priest is done though, which is sad. But it is what it is... Trent on the other hand... I'm convinced he's still the main man in K.C. They may have to pay Huard more to stay now. Just look around the league and consider how many teams with improve with him. Heck, if they truly do the (to me) unthinkable and keep Huard as starter, Green may be getting offers to go elsewhere.

As a K.C. fan, you're not worry at all about the chemistry being messed up if Green comes back. I mean, he would be like the Tin Man, he would need some oil to get him going again...Not to mention shake to rust off.

I don't believe in "chemistry" as much as some people talk about, unless by that term you simply mean timing and comfort. As a veteran, Green should be able to pick up timing with Gonzo and Kennison just fine. He's very good at feeling pass-rush, but the new faces on O-line have been slowly getting better. One thing that may benefit is that Samie Parker has really regressed this year and Green may feel more comfortable than Huard going out on a limb sometimes to get him worked into the offense. Granted I'm not happy with how Parker has come along, but Green is more like the "Tom Brady" of the team, he knows all of the parts of the offense and he's very good at fully utilizing them all. Again, nothing against Huard, but the sooner the little cobwebs come off Green, the sooner we can get back to what we've depended on four five years. I'm even going to go out on a limb and say that the offense can be more like the dynamic thing that Al Saunders ran. In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed Solari getting comfortable with creativity of formations, motions and shifts and they've been able to get away from the vanilla. Green knows this stuff already, so I don't think they're going to revert to the Marty-ball like thing that people think they will under Edwards.

Huard has eleven touchdowns and one interception after he became starter. The Kansas City offense is clicking and they have chemistry. Why screw with what has been working for you the past few weeks. Edwards should stick with Damon Huard. If anything goes amiss, you have a more than capable backup in Green. Ride this train till the wheels fall off, Herm!! Remember the Grbac-Gannon situation.
