Cowher Past Prime

As a devout and life long Steeler fan, it pains me to say this. It is time to show Bill Cowher the door. It is starting to look like he has lost control of this team. It is starting to look like the NFL is passing him by. His old school style no longer works in a new school NFL. He can not make changes to his gameplan during a game, and that is the name of the play calling game in the NFL. It is hard to sit and watch Cowher stand and smirk with his arms crossed as the Steelers continually get out played, and most of all out coached coming off a Super Bowl win.

The Steelers are no longer the hard hitting, great morals, blue collar team they were before their fifth Super Bowl win. It is a joke that the city of Pittsburgh still supports this man as a head coach. Now don't get me wrong, WAS a great coach, but that is now the past. He is showing he can't handle a team coming off of a Super Bowl, or adjust to how teams play them. This is a new NFL and Cowher is an old coach. They even made a bad first round pick with Santonio Holmes, which is rare. Holmes lacks NFL playmaker talent, and has some off the field issues as well. They should have picked Chad Jackson, or Laurence Maroney who would have given them the big back they need. And they also missed T.J. Duckett when they could have traded him for a fifth round pick. The Steelers got caught up in their own hype. But overall its all good, they can draft a quarterback with next years top ten pick. Ben was never really that good, and got hot for three lucky games last year. He had a rating of 22 in the Super Bowl. This Bum is being exposed by and average team, for the average quarterback he is. Did someone say Charlie Batch?

Yeah, you always want to fire a coach the year after winning the super bowl. Championships are the surest sign of a bad coach.

What is his record in Championship games. This teams front office has put together outstanding teams over the last 15 years for Cowher. Anybody with half a brain would eventually win one. The best measure of a coach is how they preform when everybody is gunning for them.

And who were his QBs in those games? He's captained this team to games they never should have even been playing in with QBs like Stewart and O'Donnell. He's had inferior quarterbacks and still won games. Don't piss on Cowher because he ONLY got you to two Super Bowls with one Championship.

And what's with bashing Rothelingsburger (sp?)?? He was a winner in college and has been a winner in the NFL since he started. He's had an off year but considering his offseason it's really not that suprising. Jeez, are all Pittsburgh fans spoiled winner babies like Yankees fans already after one Super Bowl? You should know you have problem if a Browns fan is defending the Steelers. :-)

When has Ben had Pro Bowl stats? He was never that great.

Who gives a crap about the Pro Bowl and stats? (Although the last two seasons he completed well over 60% of his passes, the standard for a good QB.) Wins are what counts. He went 13-0 in the regular season as a rookie and took the team to the AFC Championship. In his second year he went 11-5 and won three straight playoff games on the road including a Super Bowl. What the heck else do you want from the guy?

And again, if you think Roethlisberger is an inferior QB, why would you fire Cowher? He won a Super Bowl with a subpar QB. Who do YOU think won the game? CPCP's right - you're spoiled, and your expectations are unrealistic.

By the way, I genuinely hate to paint people with such a broad brush, but it's opinions like this that keep leading me to the conclusion that mid-westerners have about as much football savvy as a snowblower.

Hey! How can you say I'm right and then compare me to a snowblower!? Dukeboy lives in California. I'm the only midwesterner in the conversation. Don't let someone that breaths the same air as the Raiders represent us in the actual midwest. :-)

How many times have we heard this from idiot Steelers fans? How many times has someone called for Cowher's resignation? He's a stellar coach, he's going to be a first ballot Hall-of-Famer, and he is EIGHT MONTHS REMOVED FROM WINNING YOU A SUPER BOWL. I'm a Cowboys fan, and for years I watched the Cowboys coaching position as a revolving door that admitted the likes of Barry Switzer and Chan Gailey. Be happy for the coach you have and shut up.

I'll say one more thing, and then I'll put this dog to rest. You say Cowher WAS a great coach. When was that, exactly? Was that when he WASN'T winning Super Bowls, and when he WASN'T winning AFC championship games, when other Steelers fans were calling for his head? Or did something happen between February and now to make him a bad coach?

I was talking to a big Steelers fan this weekend. Didn't Cower buy some big ranch in North Carolina? Isn't there a bunch of rumors that he will leave Pittsburgh after this season anyways?

The game has passed him by? Didn't he win the SB last year or was there another coach in Pittsburgh. How does the game pass you by in 9 months?

The Problem isnt with Cowher or Ben, the problem is wit the loss of four key individuals to both sides of the ball. Bettis, Randle El, Von Oelhoffen, and Chris Hope. Watch the San Diego game again - a large number of defensive pressures on Ben came because Willie Parker let people past him - Bussie was a tremendous pass blocker. Randle El brought a lot of versatility to the offense - no one has filled that spot yet. Kemo helped anchor the D line which is the cornerstone to other defensive strengths. and Hope allowed Polamalu to do what he does best - create chaos.

Two significant injuries thus far have made major differences - Ward's calf has hampered his playmaking ability and Polamalu's shoulder has hampered him as well.

New players take time to develop and no coaching or QB'ing will overcome injuries to vital personnel. Cowher cant keep the four departed players just to give the new guys time to develop.

anyone calling for Cowher or Ben's head needs to seriously examine where their own head is in relation to their own rump......

Continuation of Anonymous Fanatic #2 (same person).

Again looking at the San Diego game - Jeff Hartings is a multi-season Pro-bowl caliber player, yet he was moved around the pocket at will be the San Diego NT (forgot his name). When giving Ben time to set and pass, collapse of the pocket from the NT/Center is just about as bad as you can get, especially when that collapse is precipitated by ONE DEFENDER - this means that the blitzing team can send just a couple additional players and sacks result (which we saw).

Rest assured that the majority of us Steeler fans aren't calling for anyone's head. We are watching the season with worry, of course, but no true fan is bashing his own team publicly....

I love how the coach is blamed automatically for everything.

The coach did not fumble a punt on the 9 yard line to lose the cincy game. The Coach did not let half the line in to cause not one but two interceptions in the Sd game. The Coach has consistantly took the players given to him either by circumstance or by choice, and made them into a competitive team.

I bet if the Steelers went 16-0 last year, and won the superbowl, You'd still be screaming for cowher's head this year because to you, anything short of perfection is unacceptable.

sometimes youa re the bug, sometimes you are the windshield, the Steelers have been the Windshield way more often than the bug......

No, not ALL Steelers fans are asshats. The Steelers notoriously start slow, and they have again. All the pundits keep calling Big Ben 'rusty'. What he is, is a half second late on his decisions and throws. That can be attributed to having his eggs scrambled in the crash, and missing a significant amount of reps in preseason and the first game. He will get better. He always does. And Cowher is a desciple of Marty Schottenheimer. 'Martyball' has won a lot of games for the Steelers. Ben missed a few plays last night, and the defense gave up too much, but it's not like the Chargers dominated the Steelers. Keep your pants on Dukeboy....the Steelers will bounce back. They always do.

How many games did Bradshaw lose before winning his first ring? How many did he lose after winning his first? Three games into the season and everyones calling for Ben's head? Or Cowhers? How many games, no, how many SEASONS did Noll coach after his last Superbowl win? Lets have a reality check here, people!
