CLARKE STADIUM
The creation of Clarke Stadium, named after former Edmonton mayor Joe Clarke, in July of 1938 helped Edmonton become a big league city and solidify the Eskimo franchise. In August of 1938 the stadium opened with much fanfare, before a crowd of 2,500.Clarke Stadium was the home of the Edmonton Eskimos until August 23, 1978.
An entirely new Clarke Stadium was constructed in 2001 for the 8th IAAF 2001 World Championships in Athletics, adjacent to Commonwealth Stadium. The new facility was developed for $4.35 million, including new grandstands, dressing rooms, washroom facilities, concession stands and field. With a 2500 seat capacity, grass field and Mondo track, Clarke Stadium is a legacy for all amateur sports and is operated by the City of Edmonton. The Edmonton Eskimos often still use the facility for practice and special events.
