Columbus (NFL)

The Columbus Panhandles were a football team from Columbus, Ohio in the National Football League. The Panhandles played as part of the NFL from 1920-1922. They were then reorganized as the Tigers and played from 1923-1926. The Panhandles were originally formed in 1904 by Joseph F. Carr who was to become the NFL president from 1921-1938 that many consider the architect for the leagues success. The team often went by the nickname Handles and historically are considered charter members of the National Football League because of their assumed membership in the American Professional Football Association (the NFL's original name) in 1920. Joining the young NFL was the death blow to the team because they were just a good sandlot team and most of the members were getting old and could not compete with the younger college trained athletes. Also, they did not have the finances to pay the higher salaries of the college trained players.
