College Football Update: Weis goes QB-by-Committee

by Oh No Romo

Michigan loses to AP State and all the sudden, the world starts calling for Lloyd Carr's head. They still have a chance to go 11-1. Anyway, here's the update.

  • Notre Dame lost to Georgia Tech 33-3. It wasn't even close. What bothered me more was the fact that all three of Charlie Weis' quarterbacks played. Demetrius Jones started, then came Evan Sharpley and finally Jimmy Clausen came in. Hopefully we will see one starter next week, instead of a quarterback-by-committtee
  • Iowa got their first win, defeating Northern Illinois, 16-3
  • UCLA destroyed Stanford 45-17
  • Illinois fell short against Missouri, 40-34. Bigger story, Juice Williams got knocked out of the game. Hopefully, he's ok.
  • Boston College won against Wake Forest 38-28

I'll have a full recap of the days events as well as tonight, a little later.

Peace

Nos

Weis addressed the QB situation well in his press conference. Fluff or not it made sense. Weis explained that his plan was Jones through out the game with Sharpley coming in for 2 minute type offenses. He originally had no intention on playing Clausen. Jones showed quickly he was not ready - thus the need for Sharpley. Once the game was out of hand he looked at it as a good time to get Clausen's feet wet. Like I said - it may be fluff; but it at least made some sense

Jones just did not look good. Sharpley looked ok, I think he should start next week.

I didn't think his brothers were all that great. Casey and Rick.

Sharpley probably will start next week. Jones had been working the hardest to earn the spot in practice - but he just choked. During practice Jones looked like a passing Tony Rice - when he gets some PT and the freshman / soph running corp get their hands you'll see the option back from the late 80's.

I was working my detail and saw Jones coming out the tunnel - he was toooo wound up. I think his nerves got the best of him. Sharpley has had the most experience and that will be needed in Happy Valley.

I did see some good in Clausen already when he looked down field, scrabbled, and kept looking deep - and instead of forcing it (ala Quinn) he tucked and ran out of bounds. He had some happy feet but he looked like he could get comfortable with some more experience. He needs to humble himself off the field (I am not going to go into detail - just trust me when I say there is more than a beer run that he needs to grow up from).

I went to HS in the same area as Jimmy Clauson's and was a Summer League competitor as our HS Varsity carrer's over-lapped by 1 year and even back in 2004 I thought Jimmy Clauson was talent, but was going down the same path as his older brother. (Who went to TENN and who's name I can't remember.) They are both way over-hyped and their heads run with that, Jimmy will hit a celing his Jr. Year at ND but it will be good enough most likely that he will be a day 2 draft selection and flame out of the NFL at some point cause he will never work to get truly better.

Notre Dame's problem isn't necessarily quarterback...ok, maybe it is...the ability of their quarterbacks to run like hell because they have an absolutely horrendous offensive line.

Lummox - That is it in a nut shell! They had the same issues last year- I will say he same thing I said last year - During the High School Gold and Black game I do not want to see any stud QBs or wide outs putting on any hats with interlocking NDs - I want to see all of the 300 lb plus elephants stand in front of the camera eating ding dongs and ho hos saying that they are proud to select the Irish.

Yes...I'm able to recognize awful lines because Tennessee's d-line couldn't tip over a sleeping cow.

It speaks volumes when Alan Pinkett (West Wood One Radio Announcer and staple member of the Gery Fouts Pinkett - Pinkett - Pass - Punt Offense) announces that the all star Irsih Player of The game as John Sullivan - ND Center - because the QB - Center exchanges were good

O-line stinks, QB needs to go to Clausen (let him get his licks in now so he can dominate jr & sr year + I liked Jones athleticism but if he turns it over he needs to sit) and pick 1 RB so that one guy can have some pride (#5 Allen looked the fastest, Aldridge still needs work, Thomas looked slow). When Jones and Allen were in shotgun together running draws and option they looked like they had potential but then came the turnovers. Clausen should get the nod against Penn St....is about the same looking passing the ball but has a quicker release that Sharpley against the blitz, won't force a throw, + the kid doesn't know how to lose! Defense played good at the start and ran out of gas from being on the field so much so maybe some promise there. O-line needs to learn how to block against the blitz or every team left will be killing them. All in all a horrible day to be an Irish fan. NO promise in the offense what so ever...how does the genious C.Weis let this happen with all the talent? By NOT being decisive on a starter at EVERY position.
