The Reds sent Matt Belisle(2-1) to the mound to try and stop the Pirates five-game winning streak. Pittsburgh started the cruising Tom Gorzelanny(3-0).
The game started off as an extreme pitchers' duel. The minimum number of batters was faced for both pitchers through the first three innings.
Cincinnati struck first, in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Josh Hamilton drew a walk and Jeff Conine doubled to deep left, putting the Reds on the board.
The Pirates were sent down in order once again in the bottom of the fourth.
The Reds pounced on Gorzelanny in the fifth inning. Adam Dunn led off with a walk, then stole second base. Dave Ross singled to put men on the corners for Belisle. Belisle laid down a sacrifice bunt and Dunn came in to score. Ryan Freel then hit an infield single to put men on the corners with two outs for Brandon Phillips. Phillips lined the ball into left to bring home Ross. On the very next pitch, Hamilton drove a deep flyball over CF Chris Duffy's head and off the top of the wall. His double scored Freel and brought Phillips around to third. Rattled, Gorzelanny balked in the fourth run of the inning.
In the fifth, Belisle retired the Pirates in order, maintaining his perfect game.
Ronny Paulino finally ended Belisle's perfect game with a double to deep right center in the sixth inning with one out. Two batters later, Duffy singled in the Pirates only run of the night.
The Reds added three more runs off of Pirates' relievers and Belisle went the distance, tossing a complete game, allowing one run and striking out five.
Game Notes:
- John Wasdin allowed 1 run and Jonah Bayliss allowed 2.
- Dunn's stolen base was his 5th of the year.
- Josh Hamilton drove in his 13th RBI.
- Belisle's complete game was the first of his career and the first for a Reds pitcher in 2007.
