Chris Speier (Chris Edward Speier) was born on June 28, 1950 in Alameda, California. He made his Major League debut on April 7, 1971 for the San Francisco Giants. In 1971, his rookie year, he hit .235 with 8 home runs and 46 RBI. Speier played for the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs over the course of his 19 year career.

Most people believe that Chris Speier's best season was 1972, when he slugged 15 home runs and knocked in 71 runs.

Chris, who played for the Cubs from 1985-1986 and served as a hitting coach for the organizations Orlando (AA) affiliate in 1995, is in his second year as the Cubs third base coach. Has served as a coach or manager for five organizations (San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A's and the Chicago Cubs) in the last 11 years including winning a World Series ring as third base coach for Arizona in 2001. Had a 19-year major league career, appearing in 2,260 games and playing for five different teams (San Francisco, Montreal Expos, St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins and the Cubs).

As a player, he went to the postseason after the 1971, 1981 and 1987 campaigns. His son, Justin, currently pitches in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He was originally selected by the Cubs in the 1995 June draft and made his big league debut with the club in 1998.

[edit] Managerial and Coaching Career

After retiring as a player following the 1989 season, Chris joined the Giants' organization as a roving minor league instructor. Returned to the Cubs organization in 1995, working as Double-A hitting instructor under Bruce Kimm. Spent four years in Arizona's minor league system, compiling a 256-240 managerial record. In his first season managing, he took Lethbridge (R) to the postseason. The next year, he managed High Desert (A) to the California League championship as his team won all six playoff games it played. Returned to the majors in 2000, serving as third base coach for the Milwaukee Brewers under Manager Davey Lopes. In 2001, Bob Brenly appointed him third base coach in Arizona a season in which the DBacks won the World Series. Also saw action in Oakland, working as bench coach for Ken Macha in 2004.

Chris batted .246 during his 19-season major league career with San Francisco (1971-1977, 1987-1989), Montreal (1977-1984), St. Louis (1984), Minnesota (1984) and the Cubs (1985-1986). Appeared in 2,260 games and recorded 1,759 hits, 464 extra-base hits and 720 RBI while scoring 770 runs. Had his best overall season with San Francisco in 1972, hitting .269 with 25 doubles, 2 triples, 15 homers and 71 RBI. Saw postseason action following three seasons (1971, 1981 and 1987). Was a three-time All-Star (1972-1974). Hit for the cycle twice in his career, doing so July 20, 1981 against Atlanta and July 9, 1988 vs. St. Louis. Made his major league debut after just one season in the minor leagues. Batted .283 in 129 games at Amarillo (AA), posting 20 doubles, 5 triples and 6 homers with 66 RBI.
