Carlos Silva is no Josh Beckett – A Hostile Hochuli Editorial

It is no surprise that the Mariners need pitching. They were in the running for Kuroda and missed out, they have been named in the Santana sweepstakes (but we all know they are being used as a bargaining chip), and they are making a run for Bedard. They have a young Phenom “Ace”, a decent number 3 (Washburn) and an alright number 4 (Batista).
What do they need?
A viable #1 or #2 and a 5. Their 5 might be Brandon Morrow. Their 5 might be Ryan Rowland-Smith. It might even be Horacio Ramirez, who they STUPIDLY tendered an offer to.
Guess how much Josh Beckett made in 2007: $6.66 Million. Carlos Silva? $4.32 Million.
This upcoming year Silva will be paid $12 Million thanks to his brand new 4 year $48 Million contract with the Seattle Mariners.
Josh Beckett in 2007:
200.0 Inning Pitched
194 Strike Outs
20 Wins
7 Losses
WHIP (Walks and Hits/Innings Pitched) 1.14
Era of 3.27
Carlos Silva in 2007:
202.0 Inning Pitched
89 Strike Outs
13 Wins
14 Losses
WHIP (Walks and Hits/Innings Pitched) 1.31
Era of 4.19
The Mariners had absolutely no chance of getting Beckett, so this has nothing to do with him. I am using him as an example of a GOOD pitcher and what he is worth.
Josh Beckett was one of the best in the league this season and he was paid the salary that a #3 or 4 starter should be paid. If he was the free agent this season he would have had a massive payday, but he wasn’t and others cashed in on the mediocrity that is the market this season.
Enter Bill Bavasi and the Seattle Mariners.
They are willing to pay exorbitant prices for crap. That I right, I said crap.
Silva should NOT be making that much money. He is projected as #2 right now and if they are able to land Bedard (or even Santana now that his best friend is here) he will become 3 or 4. Is a 3 or 4 starter worth THAT much money????
How much was he being tendered by his previous team, the Twins? 3 years for $18 million. Half the yearly price.
Stupid, Bill. Stupid.
If you are NOT able to put a decent 1 or 2 on the field this season you will have people at your door, wondering why you are paying $23 Million to Silva and Sexson; why you traded a decent 1 st baseman instead of offloading (or cutting) Sexson; why you have failed to backload positions that are already filled. How many catchers will we draft just to find out that they aren’t good enough to be the future?
Bill, right now there is a lot of anger and animosity in Seattle. This can be attributed to the trouble on Montlake and the anger at the Hawks’ #37. You got booed at the Hall of Fame night of Edgar Martinez. People already think that you are a waste of flesh and are angry that you can’t seem to take the 7 th highest payroll in the Majors to the playoffs.
You perennially overpay.
I am totally fine with Silva, but not that price tag.
I wish I could throw 80 miles an hour.
