Can You Have a Favorite Player on Your Rival Team?

Jeter's signature fist pump looks great at Fenway.

I'm a Boston Red Sox fan, and, believe it or not, my favorite player is Derek Jeter. I get razzed all the time because he plays for the Yankees. I just love the way he plays the game and how he hustles and puts his heart and soul for the game like there's no tomorrow. Call me crazy, but he's my role model and has been ever since I was a kid. I read a biography about him and he's inspired me to play the game even more. Like Jeter, I'm a shortstop, and I hit for contact and I'm known for my defense and high average. I can name a thousand reasons why I love him:

  • He's clutch
  • He's a good sport about a lot of things
  • He's honest
  • He's logical
  • He hustles on every play
  • He has great instincts...
  • He shows great leadership skills and shows that he's a good captain for his team.

There's only one reason why I DON'T like him, and that is because he plays for the Yankees, which is the #1 reason why I'm jealous of the Yankees ever since I became attached to baseball. My question to you guys is that if you have a favorite team and you have a rival team, is it "all right" if your favorite player plays for your rival team?

They actually sell these in Boston? Sorry for the assumption, I just get so tired of the "Jeter is gay" crap I just replied without facts.

I find it baffling that you "Like" jeter...respect him maybe...but admire, support and make him your favorite player...that's weird in my book...

No you cannot have a favorite player on a rival team. You can repsect a player on a rival team, but they cannot be your favorite.

I agree. You can have a favorite player on a team that isn't a big rival, but when they are your team's arch enemy, respect is as far as you can go.

Exactly I live in DC and respect a lot of current and ex Skins even work with some ex Skins, but Id never cheer for them for any reason, and the guys I know who played for the skins understand and respect that fact.

See? What's wrong with that? Also, another question. Suppose you have a favorite player that signs with or gets traded to a rival team. Is he ALL THE SUDDEN not gonna be your favorite player anymore just because he switches teams?

K now I think that brings up a good point. It is different when its baseball and it is AL and NL. What Beltron does has basically no affect on the Yanks or their chances to make the playoffs.

That's different and refer to MJD's article...that's what he wrote about...

I remember a Middays conversation between Anthony Gargano and Mike Missineli a few years ago....they were talking about how to buy a jersey (as a matter of fact, it was about dumb eagles wagon riders who bought TO jerseys...)

Anyways, they were talking about how to buy a jersey because, since they're so expensive, people generally buy jerseys of "their guy" as they referred to it. And when you buy that jersey, you gotta buy it at the right time...not when the guys too old, or close to the end of a contract, or possibly a turd (see TO)...I've owned a Dawkins jersey since '99 and considered buying an Utley Jersey since '04 (when Chase was locked up with a deal, I was locked up with a jersey)...the same applies for guys that jump teams...

Like Johnny Damon for you silly sox fans...

Silly Sox fans? First off, I don't think Johnny Damon is a traitor like many other Sawx fans do. I still like Johnny Damon. I don't change my attitude for a player just because he has a different jersey on. I lose my respect for people for what they do. Damon still loves the game, I feel like the Red Sox disrespected him for not giving him a bigger offer, which is why Damon went to the Yanks, they were the ones that offered him the most money. I have no problem with that. Sure, it's a little bit selfish, but if you're someone like Damon who wants more, and you REALLY need him, in my opinion, you need to give him more than 12 mil...sorry, that's just my opinion.

I disagree with that. Damon and Giombi represent two large scale sellouts in my mine. Both were once the face of the anti-establishment, guys who did it their own way and made it work, and they alll went cut their hair shaved their beards to cash a bigger check.

When Damon went to the Red Sox, no one complained. Why?

The reason people complained about damon leaving KC (or oakland?) was because he never said he was a "royal" for life...in boston he said he wanted to stay and would for less money... but as the saying goes...money talks and bullshit walks...

It's gonna take more than just a haircut and some shaving to consider Damon a sellout. Along the way, the Red Sox gave him 1.15 mil more than what he made in his only year with the A's compared to his last year with the Red Sox. The Red Sox should've given him a bigger offer than 12 mil in my opinion if they really wanted to keep him.. Jason Giambi, on the other hand, WAS a sellout, in my opinion. From the A's' 4.1 mil to 10.4 mil. That's a sellout.

Well, he is (or was now) good at defense in '04 and '05, and on and off in '06. I didn't only say that I'm known for my defense. I also said that I'm a good contact hitter and I have a high batting average in baseball. I think you misunderstood a lil bit.

I know, I'm not cracking on you, I'm cracking on Mr Clutch, you know, the guy who bats .238 in games 6's and 7's... Mythbusters needs to do an episode on Derek!

in PLAYOFF series that go 6 or 7 games (which would be considered "clutch time")... 180 AB, 43 H, 4 HR, 18 RBI, 37 RBI .238 AVG - in postseason series that go the full 7 games (totals): 87 AB, 17 H, .195 AVG, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 12Ks -

In the last game of a 6-7 game series, a.k.a CLUTCH time...(7 times played in a 6th or 7th game as last game of series) 30 AB, 7 H .233 Avg, 6 R, 0 HRs, 4 RBI and 8 Ks, 3XBH in these games 2 2Bs, 1 3B -

In the Series he's played in that went 7 games, here's his Game 6 Contributions (each time the Yanks were up with the chance to END the Series) - 9 AB, 2 H (both singles), 0 R, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 K, 0 XBH...

Not bad for a guy with a legacy of Clutchness and a .316 lifetime average?!?!

I'll tell Manny to shut up now KD =)
