Sandro DeAngelis booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired to give the Calgary Stampeders to a 34-32 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday night.
The 26-year-old native of Niagara Falls, Ont., who was the CFL's most outstanding special teams player last year, ran to his own end zone to dive onto his belly in celebration. After getting up, he placed his kicking foot on a teammate's knee for a mock shoe shining.
The win moved the Stampeders, 3-3, into third place in the West Division a point ahead of the Eskimos, 2-3-1.
Calgary led 24-20 after three quarters and padded its lead 1:07 into the fourth when Joffrey Reynolds found a hole up the middle and rambled 46 yards into the end zone to make it 31-22.
Edmonton battled back as slotback Kamau Peterson made a diving catch of a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ricky Ray for his second major of the night, tightening the score to 31-29.
The Eskimos grabbed a 32-31 lead with 1:38 left to play following a roughing the kicker penalty against the Stampeders on a Sean Fleming field goal attempt. The ball was moved to the 13. Edmonton got to a first-and-goal situation but was unable to punch it in. Fleming came back out and nailed a nine-yarder.
The Eskimos' inability to put it away came back to haunt them as the Stampeders marched downfield to set up the decisive kick by the five-foot-eight DeAngelis, who is in his third year with the Stampeders.
The game started with decidedly fewer dramatics.
After an early punt single by Fleming, Calgary roared back with an impressive opening drive before stalling out settling for a DeAngelis field goal.
Henry Burris found Brett Ralph for a 10-yard passing TD early in the second quarter for a 10-1 Calgary lead.
Edmonton made it 10-5 on an 18-yard Fleming field goal and a single on the ensuing kickoff. It was 10-8 after another three-pointer by the veteran kicker with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
On Calgary's next play, a scuffle erupted and Edmonton linebackers A.J Gass and Kenny Onatolu were ejected. The Commonwealth Stadium crowd of 32,644 hollered disapproval.
Calgary, helped downfield by Edmonton penalties, moved ahead 17-8 with two minutes to go before halftime when Jeremaine Copeland reeled in a four-yard pass from Burris.
The Eskimos put together their first solid drive of the contest in the remaining time, culminating in a five-yard pass from Ray to running back Tyler Ebell to make it 17-15 just before halftime.
Calgary started the third quarter with a 38-yard field goal by DeAngelis but the Eskimos came blazing back with three big plays in under a minute, completing the drive with a 27-yard TD pass to Peterson to put Edmonton ahead 22-20.
The Stampeders gained one point back on a single from a missed field goal and DeAngelis was good on his next field goal from 42 yards to end the third quarter with Calgary ahead 24-22.
Notes: Calgary is at Montreal next Thursday, while the Eskimos play at home against Hamilton next Saturday . . . Both teams were coming off poor performances. Edmonton allowed five turnovers in a 54-14 loss to Saskatchewan and the Stampeders committed six turnovers in a 32-27 loss to the B.C. Lions . . . The two Alberta teams being in a battle for the basement was a rather unique situation. In the 58 years since the Eskimos came into being in 1949, only once have the provincial rivals both finished at the bottom of the standings. That was in 1950 when Calgary finished last and Edmonton next to last. In the last 58 years, either Edmonton or Calgary finished first or second in the division 51 times . . . Entering the game, the Stampeders had won only one of eight games in Commonwealth Stadium . . . Eskimos receiver Jason Tucker was deleted from the lineup . . . Running back Tyler Ebell left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.
