Matchups against California State University, Fresno and the Louisiana Institute of Technology typically will not get any top twenty-five team riled up to play them. Therefore, it is the head coach's responsibility to adequately prepare his team for the upcoming matchups. UCLA's Karl Dorrell has failed to do this over his coaching career as the Bruins will often lose to teams that they should easily defeat.
On Saturday, both Cal's Jeff Tedford and Oregon's Mike Belotti did what Dorrell couldn't do, beat a lower echelon Division 1-A football team in convincing fashion. While both Tedford and Belotti have experience, Dorrellitis (the ability to lose games to inferior football teams) in the past, they made a strong statement with their convincing performances on Saturday.
Led by Justin Forsett's 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Cal thoroughly dominated Louisiana Tech, 42-12. The victory marked the Bears' third consecutive 30-plus point scoring output with the offense flexed its muscles by also racking up over 440 yards of total offense. What was most encouraging was the fact that the defense was significantly better than the first two games, where they allowed over 30 points in both outings.
[1] The Ducks' showed their victory against Michigan in the Big House wasn't a fluke as Dennis Dixon threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in a 52-21 victory over Fresno State. His sidekick, running back, Jonathan Stewart rushed for 165 yards in the victory. and
Historically, Fresno State has proven to be capable of upsetting many BCS schools on the road with Pat Hill's bunch playing with a chip on their shoulder. Therefore, it was nice to see Oregon focused during the victory despite the loss of their team mascot.
