It's a phenomena that occurs when everyone likes and knows a song, it actually deteriorates the value of it because you judge the fact that if you heard it so many times and it's that popular, it has to suck. Most super-popular songs are better than you remember (Ace of Base, Macarena, the ketchup song, "Whoop, there it is", WLTDO, Can't touch this", It's gettin hot in herre") and they stand the test of time.
Obviously there are exceptions that cannot be easily explained away. "Ice, Ice Baby" still sucks every bit as much as the day it was released. Truly, a travesty in the annals of time.
Certainly, if an alien landed on earth right now with a full comprehension of human beings their tastes and emotional attachment to music, but no knowledge of their musical history or archives and you played just about ANY song on the radio today vs. WLTDO, the alien would be going "Woof, woof, woof!"
WLTDO cuts to our central primate brain and urges us to kick somebodies ass for letting our dogs out. What's better than that?
