In what he is calling a "mutual decision", Grady Little today resigned as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Little informed General Manager Ned Colletti during a conference call today, stating personal reasons for his resignation. During his season ending press conference the day after the season ended, Little stated he "would stay til the end," a reference to having one more year remaining on his contract. Both Colletti and Little confirmed the decision was Little's, and he would have remained Dodgers manager for 2008 despite the increased frequency in the rumors former Yankees manager Joe Torre had been offered a contract.
Little called this season the toughest of his career, likely in part due to Jeff Kent's one man destruction of the clubhouse with his whining of a cut in playing time among some of the veteran players.
If Torre is hired, it will be for at least the five million a season he turned down from the Yankees, although the Dodgers coaching staff has already signed their 2008 contracts. With at least Don Mattingly and Kevin Long expected to follow Torre wherever he goes, this could turn into a mess the Dodgers hadn't thought of.
