Breaking News: Cabrera, D-Train Acquried by Detroit

35
Vote

by Behbigben15

I just saw on Sportcenter, that SP Dontrelle Willis, and 3B Miguel Cabrera were acquired by the Detroit Tigers. The two were dealt in an 8-player deal which sent 6 to Florida, and 2 to Detroit.

This is a BIG addition for Detroit, and may actually get them back into the playoff race.

Detroit gets- Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis

Florida gets- Andrew Miller, Cameron Maybin, Mike Rabelo, and three prospects

Detroit's updated lineup looks a little something like this:

SP- Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Bonderman, Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson

C- Ivan Rodriguez

1B- Carlos Guillen

2B- Placido Polanco

3B- Miguel Cabrera

SS- Edgar Renteria

OF- Marcus Thames, Curtis Granderson, Magglio Ordonez

DH- Gary Sheffield

The deal is expected to be announced Tuesday night when the physicals and paperwork are completed.

"If it does happen, obviously they're getting two very good players," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who managed the Marlins in 2006. "Miguel Cabrera is one of the finest hitters in the game. He can do so many things with a bat, whether you want him to hit a home run for you, you want to hit and run, work the count, get on base. And Dontrelle Willis has been one of the premier lefties in the National League."

Cabrera earned $7.4 million this past season and was due to make more than $10 million in 2008. Willis made $6.45 million in 2007 on a one-year contract and will be arbitration eligible again this season.

Willis was on vacation when he heard the news.

"I'm in Mexico right now with my family. I'm kind of busy," he told the AP.

From Foxsports.com's Ken Rosenthal:

The Marlins, stalled in their attempts to trade third baseman Miguel Cabrera, could be laying the groundwork for an even bigger deal.

The Marlins and Tigers are engaged in preliminary talks about a blockbuster that would send Cabrera and left-hander Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a package of young players, according to major-league sources.

Outfielder Cameron Maybin and left-hander Andrew Miller likely are among the Marlins' targets. The Tigers already feature two veteran left-handed starters, Kenny Rogers and Nate Robertson, possibly making Miller available in a deal for Willis.

Cabrera would play third base for the Tigers. It is uncertain what would happen to the Tigers' incumbent third baseman, Brandon Inge, if a deal were completed; he possibly could be sent to another team.

The Marlins are at an impasse in their talks about Cabrera with the Angels. The teams are in agreement on three players the Marlins would receive, sources say — second baseman Howie Kendrick, catcher Jeff Mathis and minor-league pitcher Nick Adenhart. The Angels are balking at including right-hander Ervin Santana; the substitution of outfielder Reggie Willits possibly could lead to a deal.

If this is true, HUGE move by the Tigers! WOW! That is amazing! But what is going to happen to Brandon Inge (not that anyone cares)? :P

I would move him back to Catcher, because I don't think Pudge has much left in him, so they should use him as a backup to Pudge, and play him once, or twice a week to give Pudge a rest.

Defensive replacement, utility infielder, backup catcher... he'll still have a role on the team - might not be an everyday player - but the Tigers could make good use of him...

Cabrera will play the outfield. Inge is a solid third baseman. Gave up two HUGE prospects, but the Tigers are built to win now.

Cabrera won't play outfield! In that case, they wouldn't have gotten Jacque Jones. They already have enough outfielders with Thames, Rayburn , Maggs, Jones, Granderson, etc. And Inge had 18 errors last season (tied for AL lead), and hit .241 with 12 homers. Thats not a solid 3rd baseman to me, especially compared to Cabrera. Inge will go straight to the bench, or maybe even done

Inge is better than Jacque Jones. Cabrera will go back to the outfield. He might play third once and a while, but trust me, Inge is better than Jones/Thames.

Inge is an above-average defensive 3B, despite the errors. He has more errors because he gets to more balls, which is proven by his RF (range factor) of 2.86, good for 3rd in the AL, and his ZR (Zone Rating) of .803, which was actually the best in the American League. Here's what I would do, if anybody cares: Leave Inge at 3rd, have Cabrera and Sheffield split time in LF/DH, Granderson in center, and Ordonez in right. See what you can get for Thames, and keep Jacque Jones for a utility outfielder.

C'mon man, range factor, zone factor, all that crap doesn't help you swing the bat. Inge led the league in strikeouts with 150, and had a .236 avg last year (my other comment said .241 but that is his career avg.). If a pitcher see's a lineup with Granderson, Polanco, Maggs, Cabrera, Sheff, Guillen, Renteria, Pudge, and Jones, then there is now way that they will have room to breathe. Everyone in that lineup are .280 and above career hitters. Why put Brandon inge in? Because of his "defensive skills"? Yea right

I'd rather have Inge and his bad bat and great glove than Jones and his average bat and average glove. It's not completely about offense, you need guys who can prevent runs. The Tigers will score enough runs.

I never said they weren't a good team to start. I just said it helped them out alot, which is did. I just said they are now in the middle of the playoff hunt, because they have to compete in their division every year, and they weren't in the playoffs last year, were they?? No, they weren't, but they will return this year.

This instantly makes Detroit serious play-off contenders. After the decline last year, this adds some potency to the lineup that may actually allow them to compete with the young Indians team. Given the talent they're trading away, however, I'm not sure they can compete with Cleveland's deep farm system for more than a couple of years. Depends on the deals (if any) they sign these guys to. In my opinion, the D-Train isn't done yet--I think he's got a couple of really good years still left in him. Last year was an aberration.

I agree, I think Willis in Detroit is the best place he could have landed in the AL. He would have been destroyed in the AL East, and wouldn't get enough run support in the AL West. He has a great lineup to support him, two great young pitchers in front of him so he doesnt have to be the man, and a GREAT pitchers park to pitch in. I don't see 22-10 again, but he could win between 14-16 to a 3.50-4.00 ERA, which will be great with that lineup.

This really gives them the all around depth to match the Sox in the AL. Should really be an interesting year. I'm not sure though if Willis will be the same pitcher he was against NL hitting... I see him being number 3 in that rotation behaind Bonderman and Verlander.

According CBS they already have Cabrera at third and Inge backing him up.How long will that stay like that is probally the biggest question now.The only thing that does worry me is this is similar to the Yanks a couple of years ago where they had an amazing lineup but didnt win the World Series.I do believe that the-d will be contenders this year but I wouldnt say give them the crown yet.

Thank you. A lot of people say that Inge's defensive skill makes up for the stupid stuff he does in the batters box. I've never seen more 'called third strikes' come against any other guy. He is an average defender and horrible at the plate. Inge will most likely be the utitily guy now.
