[edit] Biography

Brandon Webb was born May 9th, 1979 in Ashland, Kentucky. Webb graduated from Ashland High in 1997 and then went on to play collegiate ball at the University of Kentucky where he played with future Arizona Diamondbacks teammate Andy Green.

In 2000 Webb was drafted in the 8th round by the Diamondbacks and then went on to hold appoints to a .172 clip that same year in the Midwest League.

In his second year in professional baseball playing in the California League Webb showed some promise having a 3.99 ERA and striking out 158 batters and pitching over 150 innings, but he also beaned 27 hitters and at the beginning of year he had an ERA well over 8.

In '02 Brandon dominated double A and was able to move up to triple A before the season was done, he was also elected to the double A all-star game.

Brandon Webb started the 2003 season with the Tucson Sidewinders but when Randy Johnson went down early in the year with an injury "Webby" burst on the scene and was incredible, he was able to stay in the majors because of more pitching injures and the trade of Byung-Hyun Kim to the Boston Red Sox and Webb capitalized on the opportunities by earning himself a 2.84 ERA and while he finished behind Dontrelle Willis in the 2003 Rookie of the Year he did earn the Baseball America ROY.

'04 might have been the definition of sophomore slump as Webb finished the year with a dismal 7-16 record and though he being, a ground-ball pitcher and having an absolutely horrendous defense, was pitching away from contact and thus walking many more then the year before and the year after, but Webb does have to take some credit for his terrible record.

2005 was an amazing year for Webb as he had a new and better "D" this may have contributed to Webb setting a career high in wins but more importantly it allowed Brandon to do what comes naturally and pitch to contact this also allowed him to more then cut his walks in half, but as with '04 not everything can be put on the defense as Webb definitely deserves the majority of the credit.

2006 was Webb's best year yet as he lowered his walk totals increased his strike outs and innings, all of this culminated in his Cy Young Award.

[edit] Scouting Report

Brandon Webb is an extreme ground-ball pitcher who features either the best or close to the best sinker-ball in baseball. Webb is also able to get a key strike out when needed. He has developed an above average change-up though it has caused him arm problems in the past. He has a good curve that he uses very effectively. He also has a good 2-seem fastball or "come-backer" that he uses to buckle lefties. Webb has good control averaging less then a walk per 4 innings last year.
