Brady Quinn Signs

18

by Wrmjr

Brady Quinn has ended his holdout and signed with the Cleveland Browns for $20.2 million ($7.75 million guaranteed) with incentives that could take it to $30 million. He is on his way to the Browns' training camp to join his team in their pre-season workouts.

Of course, after holding out this long, Quinn has virtually guaranteed he will not be the Browns' starter on opening day. Indeed, he'll be lucky to be ready to play by game 9. I don't know how much money his hold-out netted him, but I hope it was worth it--it has gotten his professional career off to a guaranteed rocky start.

I frankly don't think Quinn would have won the Browns' starting job in the preseason or during the regular season. He may not be there until the start of next season. He has too much work to do improving his accuracy, so this doesn't really set him too far behind in terms of playing time this season.

I agree about the work he needs, however his competition is Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye. It's not like he's trying to unseat a pro-bowler or team legend.

He did him self a favor if he doesn't start this year. He's a rookie -- rookie QBs need a year with the clipboard.

A year with the clipboard helps if there is someone to learn from. It's not clear that such a person exists in Cleveland.

I used to feel that way. But as long as there is good protection (I know the Browns lack this) I think its good for a QB to get out there early and get the reps in. You can find out a lot about a young QB when they do that.

Of course you can learn with a clipboard in your hand. Look at what Carson Palmer did in his first year after learning under Jon Kitna, of all people. Of course, he's tremendously talented and good-looking, but still, that year on the bench makes the transition easier.

Unless there are no viable options at QB (ex: Vince Young), having a clipboard for a year helps.

I think the point is...the browns are going to suck this year..and brady quinn is not going to fix that...so why risk hurting him and his career (physically and mentally), when you can just put a body in... Look at Culpepper in Oakland...like he's gonna make that team a contender...especially in that division...

That is true. The Browns will suck. Rather its Quinn or Frye the Browns will struggle. There is a losing mentality in Cleveland surrounding the Browns. They are like the Cubs loveable losers who think its funny how they flounder.

Let's count them off shall we?

1) He got rid of Quincy Carter for no reason at all after Carter just finished going 10-6 with a promising future ahead of him as a Cowboy

2) He changed our defense from 4-3 to 3-4 when 4-3 is clearly more dominant in the NFL these days

3) He skipped over Steven Jackson to sign Julius Jones.

4) He kept signing old washed up QB's to start for the team

Shall I keep going?

Carter need to be let go. He didnt stick with the Jets, and even got cut in Arena football this past year.

The 3-4 is more effective and provides more pressure, check out the Chargers Steelers Broncos and even Pats as examples.

He did blow the Jackson draft and Im upset about that.

He made the switch and is responsible for starting Romo mania.

Carter was playing pretty good when he got cut. Yea he had 21 INT's but he had over 3000 yards and a 59% (i think) completion percentage. He was definitely a better choice than Testeverde and Bledsoe

The 3-4 is not more effective. Look at the top defenses of the league year in and year out. Besides the Pats, most of them are 4-3. 4-3 allows not only pressure but helps your backfield in covering recievers and clogging up giant holes in the field.

He only made the switch to Romo after Jones pressured him to and Bledsoe sucked so much at that point, he was costing the team.

Not picking Jackson is enough to count out everything besides a Super Bowl victory... which we never had...

Baltimore runs a 3-4 defense and I believe Miami does as well. Thats like 10 top 10 defenses who run the 3-4. Remember just becase you see 4 DL does not make it a a 4-3 a lot of those are W-LB's who have walked up to the line to blitz.

Ravens run a 4-3, look at their depth chart. So does Miami and Denver. There were 3 teams of the top 10 that ran a 3-4 (Pittsburgh, New England, and San Diego). 7 of them run 4-3's.

He may not be trying to win the starting job from a proven veteran QB, but Frye and Anderson have played in the NFL, understand the speed of the pro game and have actually had good games (not that many, but still). And it makes very little sense to have Quinn in the lineup getting hammered every week, since it's not at all likely that the Browns will be any good this season and Jamal Lewis is on his last legs.

The truth is that we don't know what either Frye or Anderson can do when they're not running for their life. The Browns have upgraded their line significantly enough that we should be able to get a decent read on which of these guys should be Quinn's backup next year and which should be jettisoned.

My homeboy John Clayton said that Quinn had one of the worst spring mini-camps he's ever seen. He was constantly over throwing the ball, making his wideouts lunge for the ball and drilling them in the chest on short, 6 yard patterns.

He isn't playing Army, Navy, Stanford, Duke, Syracuse and Purdue anymore. The one thing he had to do endear himself to Cleveland fans was get to camp and work hard.

I'd take Tim Couch over Quinn right now.

One problem is that Quinn won't get many reps in practice with the first team, so that even if he does get a shot this year, he won't have spent much time working with the other starters.
