Bradley Injured because of an Ump

14

by Romiezzo

Apparantly, Milton Bradley of the San Diego Padres believed umpire Mike Winters made such a bad call that it was worth tearing a ligament in his leg while trying to go after the ump during a 7-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies. Manager Bud Black spun him around and Bradley is injured, yet again. What a way to end the regular season, huh Bradley?

Anyways, Mike Winters will miss some games as well. In fact, he'll miss the rest of the season. Why? Because Winters used profanity against Bradley from the conclusion made by Major League Baseball's commissioner's office. This was tole by a baseball official speaking on condition of anonymity because the reasoning for the suspension was not announced. The 48-year-old Winters became a major league umpire in 1990, and worked the World Series in 2002 and last year. Winters became the first umpire suspended since 2003, when Bruce Froemming and John Hirschbeck each were suspended for 10 days. Froemming made an anti-Semitic slur about an umpiring administrator and baseball said Hirschbeck threatened a senior official in the commissioner's office.

According to the commisioner's office, Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline, has not decided whether to penalize Bradley or not. Bradley tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will need surgery, which is expected to sideline him for at least six months. His injury didn't mean that much to the Padres anyways, as he batted .167 in September with only 1 home run and 2 RBIs.

Trouble began when plate umpire Brian Runge asked Bradley if he had flipped his bat in the ump's direction after taking a called third strike that ended the fifth inning. Runge indicated that Winters told him that Bradley had. The dispute escalated after Bradley singled, then asked Winters if he told Runge he threw his bat. First base coach Bobby Meacham and Black said Winters used profanity. Bradley called it "the most unprofessional and most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. It's terrible. And now, because of him, my knee's hurt. If this costs me my season because of that, he needs to be reprimanded. I'm taking some action. I'm not going to stand pat and accept this because I didn't do nothing wrong.

What do you guys think? Is the penalty made for Mike Winters too harsh, just right, or too lenient?

Very true it doesnt take much to get him going, nonetheless you dont have to poke the bear in the cage.

So, Manny, by using your comparison, Bradley's torn ligament is kinda like said rock star coming down with Hepatitis C from Pam.

You can get a torn ligament fixed. Let's say you just get a lingering case of the clap instead of Hep C.

Then Pam Anderson wouldn' be a good comparison. Maybe Heather Locklear?

too lenient. this was an outrage, he totally egged on Bradley, he should be gone for the rest of this season and half of next. Winters had told the home plate umpride that Bradley was trying to hit him with the bat when all it was, was a simple bat flip. Winters KNEW that Bradley is a player that was a VERY VERY VERY short fuse. Yet you egged him on and Bradeley HAD to be restrained and the Padres have now lost a very important part of their offense at the wrong time. Even Bobby Meacham said it wsa one of the most outrageous things he has seen or heard from an umpire.

I say "an eye for an eye" in this instance. Just have Bud Black wrestle Winters to the ground and call it even.

Trivia question: How many times has Milton Bradley got injured? Hint: it's in between the range of 1 and 9530463094563095634096.

I have to say that the actions of Mike Winters were completely uncalled for. Bradley, while going a bit over the top with the histrionics, was provoked by Winters, and subsequently Winters should have to miss as much time as Bradley will with this injury. If that means Bradley misses part of 08 while rehabbing, then Winters should suffer the same fate.

Agreed. Winters should know that Bradley has problems. I mean, he's been a coach beofre he even made it to the MLB. Does he NOT watch ESPN? Winters using profanity is definitely uncalled for. I think that the MLB commission finally made the right decision, for once.

Again, Winters is not responsible for the injury. Winters should be punished for his actions, and he was. He should NOT be suspended for the same amount of time Bradley misses, because Bradley takes responsibility for his own injury. Winters's actions were definitely uncalled for, but Milton Bradley needs to start learning how to interact with people like a human being.

What seems to be forgotten is the fact that even though his manager was on the field to defend him, Bradley still was out of control. Baseball players are supposed to know "when to give it up" during a dispute with an umpire. Bud Black was there to defend his player. Bradley wouldn't quit. Now, don't get me wrong here. Winters is wrong for antagonizing Bradley. No question. But Bradley clearly would not concede control of the situation over to Black and as a result, tore his ACL and ending his season. Winters is guilty for inciting an unnecessary incident that was unbecoming of an umpire. However, Milton Bradley's inability to control himself is the reason for his season ending injury.

True. He wasn't injured by what the ump had said... Also, a lot of people are calling it kharma but Bradley does a TON of non-publicized charitable work off the field...

He makes toys and board games for kids (just kidding)

He runs a Program with Inner city kids and does a ample amount of hospital visitations/work. Apparently he had a rough upbringing and has steadfastly tried to "give something back".

I have also heard from credible sources that he is a pretty laid back guy off the field and some say his anger is fueled by intense competitiveness, not anger issues...

Thanks for sharing. It is a shame that he has yet to learn to channel that competitive drive into something more productive towards the benefit of the team.

We hear it all the time, in practically every major sport... someone lost their temper and how they should know better and rise above it and be the bigger man...e.g. the Artest attack, The Melo stick-n-move, the Jake Plummer bird flipping, the Todd Bertuzzi cheap shot, etc...

The way I see it, players have a few choices in these situations: You can be totally cool and not react at all, lose it briefly and move on, lose it and forget when to stop and get booted from the game, or just have a melt-down and go way too far. Milton Bradley may have a short fuse, but it was his choice to stand there and push...

Thoughts: Perfect example of a professional ball player keeping his cool = Matt Holliday after taking a head shot from Proctor (2nd shot from Proctor in as many games). He didn't even glance at Proctor,...just took his base.

Has Bobby Cox ever been physically injured while losing his temper with an ump?

"I have also heard from credible sources that he is a pretty laid back guy off the field and some say his anger is fueled by intense competitiveness," Wouldn't that fall under the banner of anger issues? I mean, I understand being competitive. But, if you're "competitiveness" leads you to tirades that include throwing a bucket of balls onto the field, you do have an anger issue.

Padres first base coach Bobby Meacham said it was the most disconcerting conversation he has ever heard between player and umpire in 25 years of pro ball. Todd Helton said the conversation was "very interesting." Bradley won't get the benefit of the doubt because of his reputation, but two firsthand witnesses who appear to have Bradley's back tells me he's got a beef. Winters should be fired.

As an umpire, Winters had no business antagonizing anything with a ballplayer. That is inexcusable. And Bradley's reaction transcended from a verbal argument into a physical encounter with his own manager which resulted in tearing his ACL. Not a proud moment for either participant.

If Bradley hasn't been fired for his repeated unprofessional behavior, Winters shouldn't be fired for his. Everyone makes mistakes, and Winters is being punished. But I wouldn't expect anyone to lose their job over one mistake that, all things considered, wasn't that big a mistake. He cussed at him. It was unprofessional, but y'all are acting like Winters took a swing at Bradley. Calm down.

I thought it was absolutely hilarious, and just the embodiment of hypocrisy, that Milton Bradley said that what that umpire did was the most unprofessional thing he'd ever seen. Really? More unprofessional than some of your tirades? More unprofessional than getting hurt because you so completely lose your mind that your coach is forced to tackle you?

Milton Bradley saying he got injured because of the umpire would be like saying I broke my hand because I punched a wall and it refused to budge. Time for him to take some responsibility for his actions. I'm GLAD he got hurt. Maybe he'll learn to cool it just a tad.
