The Boston Red Sox didn't seem to have a chance on Monday night when they sent Matt Clement to the mound to go up against Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays, but they did manage to make things interesting.
Matt Clement was hit hard giving up 6 runs in 3.1 IP on 7 hits and 2 walks. He didn't manage to strike anyone out and he still looked like he was suffering from an ankle injury after being hit by a line drive in his last start. His ERA is now 6.91 on the year. But thanks to some timely hitting he didn't take the loss.
Roy Halladay went 7 strong innings allowing 3 earned runs. His performance wasn't dominating, but that was through no fault of his own. His pitches looked good and he had great command, but the Red Sox just always seemed to manage to get the wood on the ball. The runs against him came on the first home run of the year by Coco Crisp and the 12th by Manny Ramirez.
The Sox trailed 6-3 entering the 8th inning, but Halladay took a seat after 97 pitches and Scott Downs came on to start the 8th. He allowed two runners to reach before getting an out and Justin Speier came on to try to finish the job. He got two quick outs before Jason Varitek hit a 3 run shot to tie the game.
The tie game didn't last long, however as David Riske looked shaky in the bottom of the inning and gave up a run on a double by Bengie Molina (who was 3-4 with 2 doubles) and an RBI-single by pinch hitter, Shea Hillenbrand. That gave Toronto the 7-6 lead that they would finish the game with.
Jermaine Van Buren and Manny Delcarmen performed well for the Sox combining to go 3.2 scoreless innings after coming in to save Clement.
