The Boston Red Sox (13-7, 1st in AL East), behind Curt Schilling (W, 3-1), Alex Cora, and David Ortiz, defeated Miguel Tejada and the Baltimore Orioles (11-10, 2nd in AL East) by a score of 6-1 at Camden Yards this evening. Ortiz broke a 1-1 tie in the 7th with an RBI single, and Boston never looked back. Baltimore's only run was on Tejada's solo home run (his 2nd) in the 6th.
Cora hit his first home run of the year in the 3rd off of Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera (L, 1-2) to put the Sox up 1-0. After Ortiz's single in the 7th, Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell each added two to put the game out of reach. Julio Lugo continued his cold streak, going 0-5 at the top of the order and grounding into a double play. Schilling pitched quite well, allowing only 5 hits and one run (Tejada's homer) over 7.0 innings, striking out 3 and walking 2. Hideki Okajima and Brendan Donnelly combined to throw two perfect innings in relief.
Including Tejada's tater, the Orioles only managed 5 hits: one for Aubrey Huff and Chris Gomez, and two for Paul Bako. Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis went a combined 0-8 with 2 K's in the 1-2 spots in the batting order. Cabrera actually pitched fairly well, getting charged with only 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, but his control problems continued, as he walked five to offset his five strikeouts. Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, and Jim Johnson were unable to hold the Boston offense to allow the Orioles the chance to get back into the game.
Coming Up Next... These two divisional rivals will play one more game tomorrow, with Josh Beckett (4-0, 2.55) going for what would be his major-league leading 5th win against Adam Loewen (2-0, 3.72).
