The Boston Red Sox scored 5 runs on 3 home runs and that would be all the offense they needed as they beat their bitter rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-3. (yeah...bitter rivals....I think interleague play has run its course, don't you?)
David Ortiz and Mike Lowell each hit two-run homers while Jason Varitek added a solo shot. Lowell reached base each of the four times that he got up to the plate, finishing with a 3-3 night with a walk.
Matt Clement struggled in the first inning, loading the bases on a double to Bobby Abreu, a walk, and a HBP. But he got out of the jam and cruised through the first six innings allowing only 1 run on a solo homerun to Shane Victorino. He struggled a little in the seventh allowing 2, 2-out singles to Alex Gonzalez and Jimmy Rollins. Keith Foulke came in to try to clean up the mess, but he immediately allowed a 2-run double to Chase Utley before striking out Abreu to end the inning. The damage was done, but the Sox still lead, and Clement ended up with the win improving to 4-3 on the season and his ERA dropped to 5.36.
Mike Timlin worked a perfect 8th and Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect 9th to earn his 15th save in 15 chances.
Jon Lieber struggled for the Phils, giving up those 3 homers in 5 innings. He didn't walk any, but allowed 7 hits and 5 runs. He took the loss to fall to 3-5 on the year. The good news for Philly, however, was their bullpen. Aaron Fultz, Geoff Geary, and Rheal Cormier combined to throw 4 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits (but 4 walks).
