It was a tale of three players for the Boston Red Sox, as they defeated the Texas Rangers in Arlington by a final score of 3-2. Those three players? Curt Schilling (W, 1-1) pitched 7 strong to wash away the memories of his bad opening day start; David Ortiz, who broke out of his mini-slump to slug 2 home runs and provide the entirety of the Red Sox offense; and Jonathan Papelbon, (S, 2) who showed everyone why he is the closer and not a starter, recording a gutsy five outs to get the save. All of those players figure to be big parts of any success that Boston has here.
Papelbon's save was masterful, striking out Michael Young, Hank Blalock, and Brad Wilkerson while getting Mark Teixeira and Sammy Sosa to pop up weakly to the infield. As far as the Rangers offense goes, Frank Catalanotto homered off of Schilling in the bottom of the first inning, and Nelson Cruz knocked in the only other run as a pinch hitter. Vicente Padilla (L, 0-2) pitched 7 innings and allowed three runs (all from Ortiz's home runs) while striking out four in the losing effort.
Coming up next...
The Red Sox head home to Fenway Park for their home opener on Tuesday against the snow-logged Seattle Mariners, who are probably very happy to get the hell out of Cleveland. Josh Beckett (1-0) will take the mound for Boston, facing a Seattle pitcher TBD.
The Rangers welcome the Tampa Bay Devil Rays into Arlington, sending Brandon McCarthy against Edwin Jackson for Manny's new favorite team.
