The Boston Red Sox ended the month of June - and their 12-game win streak - with a loss to the rebuilding Florida Marlins. In a game where slugger David Ortiz was resting, and the Marlins put up staff ace Dontrelle Willis while the Sox put up fill-in starter Jason Johnson, the only offense from the Sox came off the bat of recently-content left fielder Manny Ramirez.
Johnson suffered difficulties early and often, with all five of the Marlins' runs coming in the first two innings (he lasted four). His final line for the night? 4.0IP, 6H, 5 runs (all earned), 2BB, 2 K's. Not so terrible, but daunting when thrown up against the final numbers of Dontrelle: 7.0IP, 7H, 2R, 1BB, 7K's. Johnson can take heart that he allowed no homers, and settled down for the 3rd and 4th innings.
Still, the potency of D-train and the early incompetency of Johnson proved to much for the Sox to overcome. While Boston certainly had opportunities, they could never get the offense rolling against Florida last night, and finished the month of June with their second loss to a National League team this year.
