In what seems to be an emerging theme, the Kansas City Royals straight owned Curt Schilling (0-1) and the Boston Red Sox on Opening Day 2007, beating the visitors 7-1. $55 million man Gil Meche (1-0) looked worth the money, if only for one start, and held the Sox to just one run over 7 1/3 innings, on a David Ortiz double in the first.
In what brought up shades of a game against the Royals last summer in which Schilling gave up 10 hits, all for extra bases, Schilling got hit hard in the fourth, giving up 4 runs. Former Braves retread Tony Pena Jr. had two triples in the game (although he was safe on the second on a call that was dubious at best), and second baseman Mark Grudzielanek had 3 RBIs. Catcher John Buck added a home run, while phenom Alex Gordon went 0-3 with two strikeouts. Welcome to the bigs.
The Sox were (obviously) mostly quiet at the plate. Rookie second baseman Dustin Pedroia had a hit in the 3rd but was thrown out by a mile trying to stretch it into a double. Julio Lugo went 1-4 with 3K's, while Manny Ramirez, Jason Varitek, and Coco Crisp went a combined 0-11 with one strikeout apiece.
The teams will meet again Wednesday, as Josh Beckett takes the mound against Odalis Perez.
