Boston Bullpen: Holtz out, Alvarez in

6
Vote

Lefthanded reliever Mike Holtz, called up from the Pawtucket Red Sox on May 9, is on the DL after just eleven days in the major leagues. He has suffered a left elbow strain, and will be placed on the 15-day-DL retroactive to May 17.
In his place Boston has called up fellow lefty Abe Alvarez from Pawtucket. This season in AAA Alvarez is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA, and opponents have just a .197 batting average against him. In the three times he's been up to the majors he's compiled an 11.05 ERA; in 2004 with the AA Portland Sea Dogs he went 10-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 26 starts, and was the team's Pitcher of the Year.
In 1.2 innings pitched, Holtz has a 16.20 ERA. He becomes Boston's third pitcher on the DL, joining reliever David Riske and starter David Wells.
