Bonds Will Cooperate with Senator Mitchell If........

by user Alanschech

MLB.com is reporting that Barry Bonds has been asked to cooperate with former senator George Mitchell's independent investigation into baseball and the steroid era. He has stated that he will cooperate only if the information that comes out cannot be used against him in the federal investigation.

God forbid the truth could actually come out.

Doesn't Barry understand that nobody believes in him anymore anyway? The article on mlb.com states that he doesn't want anymore fodder for the press to write another book. It's mind boggling that he doesn't understand that he is fodder for jokes, insults, and everything else under the sun.

Cooperate Barry. Give the government the information that it is looking for. Then, do us all a favor, and go away!

Screw that. The US Attorney doesn't care about the MLB investigation and won't cut any special deals based on that, and BB doesn't deserve any special deals. If I were Senator Mitchell I'd say, "Thanks, but no thanks. We'll wait to see what your federal trial tells us."

I certainly hope that there is no deal struck - I think Barry deserves anything that he gets.

I think this is ridiculous. How can you be under a federal investigation and try to say that you are going to go to your employer and confess everything, but you don't want it used against you. Shenanigans!

It won't happen, people, don't worry. As I noted above, the US Attorney doesn't care about the MLB investigation, only his (her) own investigation. Plus, every US Attorney is a US Senator-in-waiting, and to make a deal with a guy so widely disliked is a good way to screw the pooch on those ambitions. I'd be shocked beyond all belief if the Feds gave any special deal to Barry.

The fact that the Feds are trying to get Grimsley to wear a wire should clue you in to just how weak their case against BB currently is. Obviously this tactic of offering cooperation with conditions has been devised by BB's lawyers. Surely they are aware of whatever leverage they have in this situation, they are not that dumb.

Alan, is that exactly how it was phrased? That none of the evidence that came out would be used against him? Because if it was that only the evidence he PRESENTED could not be used against him, that is a perfectly reasonable request. It's guaranteed in the Constitution that nobody shall be forced to testify against themselves, and that includes presenting evidence that can be used to lead to their conviction. It's one of the reasons that people who are arrested are read their rights. In that regard, I don't think Bonds is off-base.
