[edit] History
Doak S. Campbell Stadium, which was named for a former FSU president of the same name, opened on Oct. 7 1950 with a 40-7 FSU victory over Randolph-Macon College. On Nov. 20, 2004, the field was dedicated to the current coach, Bobby Bowden, who has lost only 21 home games there over the last 29 years (147-21-2).
The stadium originally opened with a capacity of only 15,000 people. In 1954 it expanded to 19,000 and between 1960 and 1970 it grew to a capacity of 40,500. Over all the stadium has experienced nine different expansion projects with the latest bringing it to its current level of 82,300. It is now the largest football stadium in the ACC. A 2003 game against Miami saw a record crowd of 84,336.
Outside of the stadium a brick facade matches most of the buildings on the university's campus. As well there are a number of statues outside the stadium including a 9 foot tall bronze statue of Bobby Bowden, a 15 foot tall statue depicting a football player offering a hand to a fallen rival, a 19 foot tall bronze statue of Chief Osceola and Renegade and a new statue depicting a Seminole Indian family in the 1800s.
