[edit] Biography

Billy Nash (William Mitchell Nash) was born on June 24, 1865 in Richmond, Virginia. He made his Major League debut on August 5, 1884 for the Richmond Virginias. In 1884, his rookie year, he hit .199 with 1 home run and 0 RBI. Nash played for the Richmond Virginias, Boston Beaneaters, Boston Reds and Philadelphia Phillies over the course of his 15 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Billy Nash's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1893, when he stole 30 bases, hit for a .291 average and knocked in 123 runs. However, others believe that it was 1887, when he stole 43 bases, hit for a .295 average and knocked in 94 runs.

At the age of 31, Nash managed and played in 130 games for the 1896 Philadelphia Phillies. His managing record of 62-68 for a winning percentage of .477 is the best percentage for any manager born in Virginia who has managed at least 4 games. As a pitcher, Nash appeared in 2 games, for a total of 1.3 innings. He gave up 1 hit and 1 walk but zero runs. In the field, Nash had an overall fielding percentage of .896. Nash played 1464 games at 3B, 43 at 2B, 36 at SS, 8 in the outfield, and pitched in two games. Nash played for the Richmond Virginians of the American Association for that franchise's entire history (one year - 1884). Nash also played for the Boston Beaneaters in 1885-1895 (the Beaneaters started in 1876 as the Boston Red Caps, and since 1966 have been known as the Atlanta Braves), then moved on to the Philadelphia Phillies to finish his career (1896-1898).

In 1892, the Boston Beaneaters (with their season record of 102-48) defeated the Cleveland Spiders (93-56) for the World Series championship (considered an exhibition at the time). The Beaneaters won 5 of the 6 games, and the sixth game was a tie. Along with Billy Nash, the game featured the pitching from Hall of Fame members Cy Young, John Clarkson, Kid Nichols, and the batting from Hall of Fame members George Davis, Jesse Burkett, Tommy McCarthy, King Kelly, Hugh Duffy.
