Billion Dollar Bombers

8
Vote

According to Forbes, the New York Yankees are worth just over $1 billion, almost as much as the next two teams (Boston Red Sox, $617m; and New York Mets, $604m), combined. Seven teams are worth between $200m and $250m. The most valueable division is the American League East, valued at $2,497m, followed by the National League East valued at $2,099m. The American Least East and Central are the least valuable divisions valued at $1,414m and $1,383m respectively.

Money seems to make a difference. The American League East has the highest total value and account for nearly a third of all World Series victories since 1980. The National League East has the second highest total value and accounts for 20% of all World Series Victories. The American League Central, although second to last in total value, has also captured 20% of World Series victories.

If the Nats ever had a legitimate owner, they should develop into a very valuable franchise.

Two things really interest me about this:

1) The Nats MLB-imposed price is actually above the Forbes valuation. I'm shocked. I guess, though, that the Forbes valuation (as the above poster mentions) is kind of low, given the upside. <p> 2) If the Nats are worth $440m, and the Orioles are worth $360m, Peter Angelos is doing something terribly wrong.

That "Money seems to make a difference" paragraph is total junk math. The sample size is too small and the sorting makes no sense. And it doesn't follow that the top money teams *now* were the top mean teams *then*, or that total value is reflected in salaries spent. The conclusion can't be based on the data provided.

Oh, and of course the AL West lags behind in World Series victories. The division only has four teams. To make matters worse, two of the teams are 45 years old (the Rangers and Angels). Another is 28 years old (Mariners).

Its not supposed to be a complicated statistical analysis. But, some sort of trend can be distilled from the information. Hence the "seem" in the statement, money seems to make a difference.

It only seems that way because the numbers are handpicked that way, not because the trend is there.

The Yanks have money, and they win. But a lot of that is because Steinbrenner is willing to _SPEND_ that money to get the best players. Look at when CBS owned the Yankees. I'm sure they were even then a rich team, but they didn't win because CBS wouldn't spend the money!
