Better CFL Flutie

23
Vote

by Erooster

Image:DougDarren Flutie2.JPG

In a previous “Picture Game”, I asked who was the ‘Better CFL Flutie’, Doug or Darren. With the voting thus far at 23 votes it looks like the user-ship of armchairgm has voted Doug as the winner. Whether this is because he is a betterplayer, than his younger brother, or because he has better name recognition, I leave that up to you.

To further enhance this discussion, I will list some CFL facts about each player with stats included on each player. Doug Flutie’s career in the CFL began with the British Columbia Lions in 1990. Doug played in 16 games for the Lions that “rookie” season. In 1991, Doug started 18 games for the Lions. In that year, he threw for a record 6,619 yards. He was also named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player for the first time. In 1992 Doug was traded to the Calgary Stampeders. He led the Stamps to a victory in the 1992 Grey Cup. In 1994, Dougthrew for a record 48 touchdown passes. In 1996 Doug started for the Toronto Argonauts. He led the Argos to back-to-back Grey Cup championships in 1996 and 1997. In his career in the CFL, Doug was named the CFL’s Most Valuable Player a record six times and he was named the MVP in all three of his Grey Cup appearances.

On May 8, 2007 Doug was inducted to Canada’s Sport Hall of Fame, becoming the first non-Canadian inductee.

Darren Flutie signed with the British Columbia Lions in 1991. Darren played with Doug on the Lions for just eight games. His best season in Vancouver was in 1994 when Darren played 18 games, scored 8 touchdowns, and set a record 1731 yards in receiving. In 1996, Darren was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos where played for two seasons. Darren finished up his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he retired in 2002. In Darren’s 12-year CFL career, he finished with nine 1000-yard receiving seasons, 972 regular season receptions, 185 playoff receptions, three All-Star Seasons: 1996, 1997, and 1999, and two Grey Cup wins: 1994 and 1999.

In 2007, Darren was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

When I put up the "Picture Game", I voted for Darren. In a numbers comparison between QBs, Doug is a good player at the position but not great. On the other hand, Darren is one of the elite among WRs.

I seems to me that the voting on the "Picture Game" is more based upon name recognition than on the stats.

I'd say Doug Flutie is a better player than Darren. But they are both very good.

Since I never knew Darren existed, I have to do doug... Without doug, we wouldn't have had Wade Phillips coaching the cowboys because the bills would have been absolutely terrible...

Darren followed his brother to Boston College. After college, he played one season for the San Diego Chargers and briefly for the Phoenix Cardinals, before joining Doug in the CFL.

It is a tough call, because both Fluties had stellar careers in the CFL, but I think you have to give a slight edge to Doug, not only because of his six MVP awards, but the fact that he came to the CFL with something to prove, did so, and ended up back where he truly wanted to make an impact, the NFL. Had Darren been more of a big play threat, he may have gotten the nod in my opinion. They both had fantastic careers, as evidenced by the numbers.

I dunno, JuT. I dated the center for the basketball team while at Fresno State. She had 4 inches in height on me.

All I know is that TSN's poll listed one Flutie 1st on their all-time Top 50, and the other 50th. And I bet you can guess which was which... As for Doug being a good but not great QB, I was under the impression that he is almost universally regarded as one of (if not the) CFL's best QBs ever, along with Warren Moon, Damon Allen, etc.

I don't think he's eligible yet, since he only retired from pro football 2 years ago. He's an absolute mortal lock to be inducted when he becomes eligible, though.

I won't deny that Doug's name recognition helped him earn my vote - but I also must admit that one single play is etched in my brain and is impossible to ignore even though it has absolutely no bearing on the question. Guess which play (hint: I hate the U). Good article, though. After reading this, I may have to consider changing my vote. Nah - keep seeing the play.

What's amazing is that many American fans never knew Darren Flutie existed. Every red-blooded American college football fan knows about the hail mary and Doug Flutie.

It's hard to say who's better, why? They played different positions and contributed much to each position in the CFL. If Darren's last name wasn't Flutie, it's hard to say he'd have even gotten a glimmer of any American sports news airtime. On occasion, ESPN would show a CFL highlight featuring Doug, and then the few TD's between them both when in BC. "Doug ... 70 yard pass to his brother, yes his brother Darren." was usually the dialogue.

Tough call, Doug's obviously the better QB, Darren the better wideout.

It is rather amazing, considering the fanaticism of college football fans on this site. Darren was a big name at BC, surprises me that people don't remember him.

He probably is not as well known simply because of Doug Flutie to Gerald Phalen in that well remembered game in the Orange Bowl, and the fact that Darren did not graduate from BC. Factor that in with his one short season in the NFL (18 catches in 88 for San Diego, 7 punt returns for 5.1 yard average, 1 kickoff return for 10 yards) compared to what Doug did, and that is why he is not as well known.

I voted for Doug because I'd heard of him. My logic was, that if he was any good, I'd have heard of him. However, it appears I just hadn't realised how good Darren was. I knew Doug was a CFL and NFL QB that as successful - I had no idea how successful Darren was. That's why I normally don't vote on a million things - I don't know who half of the players are!
