Bernie Scherer (Bernard Joseph Scherer) was born on January 28, 1913 in Spencer, Nebraska. After going to high school at (Dallas, TX), Scherer attended the University of Nebraska. Scherer made his professional debut in the NFL in 1936 with the Green Bay Packers. He played for the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 4 year career.

Most people believe that 1937 was Bernie Scherer's best year.
