Bernie Brewer is the official mascot of the Milwaukee Brewers. Once perched in a small hut above the center field bleachers at Milwaukee County Stadium, Bernie has found a new home, perched high above the left field bleachers at Miller Park.
[edit] History
In 1970, the franchise's first year in Milwaukee, 69-year-old Milt Mason, a frustrated fan, camped out in a trailer on top of the scoreboard at County Stadium in late June, vowing not to come down until the team drew a crowd of more than 40,000. On August 16, a crowd of 44,387 showed up and the first "Bernie Brewer" was born.
By 1973, Bernie was sliding into a giant beer stein after every Brewer home run, but in 1984, the Brewers rebuilt the bleachers and Bernie was forced into retirement.
However, the demand for Bernie grew, and in 1993, Bernie returned, complete with beer stein. When the team moved into Miller Park in 2001 Bernie's "Dugout" was built into the stadium, and although the beer stein has been lost, he still heads down a slide, now to the tune of pyrotechnics at the base of the Dugout.
