The Canadian Football League held it's 95th Grey Cup in Toronto.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have won their third Grey Cup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the Rogers Center in Toronto. 52,230 fans packed the stadium to see the 95th Grey Cup.
Both teams started slow as both went two and out on their opening possessions.
The Bombers started Ryan Dinwiddie at the pivot position, making his first ever professional start. He relied on the veteran slot back Milt Stegall, throwing to him five times for 85 yards. The league’s number 2 running back, Charles Roberts, was held to 13 rushes for 47 yards with 0 touchdowns.
Troy Westwood, haunted by his play in his previous Grey Cup game, scored the first points of the game with a 16-yard field goal to put the Bombers ahead in the first quarter.
The Riders were unable to get their offense going and were held scoreless in the first quarter.
First Quarter Winnipeg 3 – Saskatchewan 0
The Bombers continued the scoring in the second quarter with a safety when Saskatchewan punter Jamie Boreham conceded the safety. Boreham conceded a second safety on the Riders next possession.
The Green Army finally got the ball moving late into the second quarter only to fumble the ball on the Winnipeg 13. On the following Bomber possession, Dinwiddie threw an interception to James Johnson who returned the ball 30 yards for the first Riders touchdown. Kicker Luca Congi finished the Riders scoring kicking a 45-yard field goal to end the second quarter.
Second Quarter Winnipeg 7 – Saskatchewan 10
In the third quarter, Dinwiddie fumbled the ball on his own 31-yard line. Kerry Joseph was unable to do anything with the ball, throwing two incomplete passes. Congi came in to kick a 17-yard field goal to start the third quarter scoring.
Dinwiddie came out for the next series on fire. He led the Bombers down the field, connecting on three passes for 85 yards. The big gain came on a 50-yard pass to Derek Armstrong for the first Bomber touchdown.
Congi competed the third quarter scoring with a 12-yard field goal.
Third Quarter Winnipeg 14 – Saskatchewan 16
Joseph completed a 29-yard pass to Andrew Fantuz for another major.
Boreham conceded his third safety in the fourth quarter.
Westwood kicked a 42-yard field goal to finish the scoring.
Final Score Winnipeg 19 - Saskatchewan 23
The CFL’s Outstanding Player of the Year, Kerry Joseph, went 13 of 34 for 181 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Joseph also led the Riders in rushing with 10 rushes for 101 yards.
Andy Fantuz won the Most Outstanding Canadian Award. James Johnson won the Grey Cup MVP.
