Barry Bonds is set to announce his retirement from baseball in a press conference this lunchtime before the San Francisco Giants opening game of the season today against the Oakland Athletics.
It comes as a bitter blow to the Giants, who hoped to have Bonds on their roster as he tried to beat Hank Aaron’s career Home Run record. Bonds will remain 21 short of that mark.
Bonds suffered another knee injury on March 31, in practice for the season opener on Sunday. Initially it was only considered minor, but tests overnight showed he requires a further operation, and was likely to miss the 2007 injury.
The team will miss a big gap in their offensive production this season, and are likely to struggle as a result.
It comes as a blow to the Giants, who’s off season plans revolved around building a short-term team to give Bonds one last chance at a ring, including the signing of Barry Zito.
