Banks Mcfadden

Banks Mcfadden (James Banks McFadden) was born on February 7, 1917 in Fort Lawn, South Carolina. After going to high school at Great Falls (SC), Mcfadden attended Clemson University. Banks was an athlete at Clemson University from 1937-1940. He played football, basketball, and ran track. He was an All-American in both basketball and football for Clemson University in 1939. For the 1939-1940 season, he was named the nation's most versatile athlete. He is the only Clemson athlete to have his number retired in two sports.
After his first year in the NFL, he was in a car accident that did not allow him to ever play football again. He then joined the military as World War II was approaching.
Following the war, McFadden coached the defensive backs at Clemson University for 26 years, and also coach the basketball team from 1947-1956. He has a building on campus named after him, and he is a member of the Clemson Ring of Honor.
