For what was expected to be a high scoring affair, it sure didn't start out that way. Both the Oregon Ducks and the BYU Cougars struggled to move the ball for the entire first quarter, as the Cougars and Ducks both found themselves in multiple punting situations.
However, the offensive whoes would not continue. It was simply a matter of which team would get hot first. That team was BYU. With just a few minutes into the second quarter, BYU's Jared McLaughlin nailed a 24 yards field goal to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Behind the arm of Seinor Quarterback, John Beck, BYU would never look back. Later in the 2nd quarter, BYU tailback Curtis Brown scored on a six yard touchdown run, putting the Cougs up by ten.
Oregon clearly could not match the Cougars potent offense at all. Mike Belotti and Gary Crowton decided to use both quarterbacks Brady Leaf and Dennis Dixon. However, both struggled throughout the entire game. To make matters worse, Beck found his tight end Jonny Harline for a 41 yard touchdown pass with just a minute left before halftime.
At the start of the second half, the Ducks started to gain some momentum as Brandon Chung intercepted a John Beck pass, taking it all the way to the their own 46 yards line. However, the Ducks' offensive woes continued as Leaf through an interception just a few plays later.
The Cougars would certainly take advantage as Brown found the end zone on a four yard touchdown run to give BYU a convincing 24-0 lead.
In the fourth quarter, it was just too much John Beck as he found the end zone on a 13 yard scamper.
The Ducks tried to salvage a comeback as Dennis Dixon hit Brian Paysinger for a 47 yard touchdown pass. The Ducks would then convert a two point converstion making it a 31-8 ballgame. However, they would not recover the onside kick, giving BYU the ball with ten minutes left in the game.
Just a few minutes later John Beck found receiver Manase Tonga open for 17 yard touchdown pass. The score gave the Cougars a 38-8 lead putting the game out of reach.
It was a dissapoiting finish for the Oregon Ducks who ended up losing their final four games. For BYU it was their tenth win in a row and their first bowl victory since 1996.
