Awesomely Awesome NFL Predictions: AFC North

by MegECass110

For my money, this is the best division in football. 3 of the teams can possibly win the division, and one of the teams is in shambles. I'll start off with a little blurb about each team, and then make 10 predictions for the upcoming year.

Cincinnati Bengals:

Off-the-field antics aside, the Bengals look to surprise some people in 2007. QB Carson Palmer silenced his critics in 2006, going to the Pro Bowl after major knee surgery. WR Chad Johnson had another solid year, and he's promised to be even better this year. Offensively, the Bengals are in good shape; it's the defense that has question marks. Stud linebacker Odell Thurman will miss his second-straight year under suspension from commissioner Roger Goodell. They also lost veterans in safety Kevin "I look exactly like Keanu Reeves" Kaesviharn and cornerback Tory James.

Pittsburgh Steelers:

A new head coach, a new offensive coordinator and a new mascot named Steely McBeam are the only major differences fans will see on the 2007 Steelers. QB Ben Roethlisberger will look to rebound after an injury-and-motorcycle-accident plagued 2006. RB Willie Parker will look to have another big season, after breaking away from Jerome Bettis' shadow last year. The defense has all of the usual suspects, including All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu, minus LB Joey Porter, who headed for South Beach after he was released by the team.

Baltimore Ravens:

I am thoroughly convinced this team overachieved last year. The defense is still great, but they lost one of its biggest contributors in LB Adalius Thomas. I just don't believe in Steve McNair. He showed his age in the postseason last year. With the loss of Jamal Lewis and the addition of Willis McGahee, I think they will rely heavily on the running game, more than they have in the past. A stout defense can only take you so far; it did win them a Super Bowl in 2000, but it hasn't gotten them very deep in the playoffs since.

Cleveland Browns:

I feel horrible for Romeo Crennel. He hasn't been given much to work with until now, and it's still going to be a struggle for the Browns. Joe Thomas will certainly help on the offensive line, they have 2 young potential weapons in WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow, and a legitimate RB in Jamal Lewis. But at the most important position on the field, QB, there is a question mark. Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson split time last year, but they added former hometown hero Brady Quinn in the draft. Until Quinn develops, the Browns will be at the bottom of the division.

Now, the ten predictions...

1) Brady Quinn will start less than 5 games in 2007.

2) Romeo Crennel will be, undeservedly, fired at the end of the season.

3) Chad Johnson will make me laugh every Sunday.

4) Carson Palmer will make a run at league MVP.

5) Steve McNair will not start all 16 regular season games.

6) Hines Ward will not lead the Steelers in receiving yards.

7) Ben Roethlisberger will return to his pre-Super Bowl form.

8) Willis McGahee will run for 1200 yards.

9) The Bengals will barely miss the playoffs.

10) The Steelers will win the division.

WARNING: There is a high possibility that none of these predictions will hold true. I accept responsibility for making said predictions, and I leave to you all to rip them to shreds. Thank you.

Meg...once again, I disagree with almost everything here... I agree with: 1 (sorta...depends on a lot...but you're probably right), 3 (I haven't been this for a non-eagles game since the 2001 edition of the cowboys), 4 (maybe), 9 (they'll win the division)

For god sake I hope Hines Ward doesn't rack up more than 1000 receiving yards. I have Santonio Holmes on my fantasy team.

I think Santonio will lead the Steelers in receiving yards. I should note that I am crazy.

I think it is far too early to make predictions regarding the steelers recievers.

IMHO, it will be the Ravens who barely miss the playoffs. I really don't feel the bengals are a quality team. Live I've said on other forums, the Bengals only had one good year in the last decade or so. Other than that, I pretty much agree with you.

Losing Tori James, Keanu Kasevaharn, Brian Simmons, and Sam Adams is a very good thing for the Bengals defense. Losing Pollack, Odell, and Frostee Rucker really stings.

I want to agree about Baltimore but every year I say that they're too old they win the division. A healthy McGahee and Todd Heap make this offense scary enough to win the north. Don't sleep on Bart Scott.

Pittsburgh is redifining itself and will take a small step back before progressing again. They don't seem like a very deep team to me, and those teams typically have bad injury problems. I don't think Big Ben is a great QB. He's solid and is best when he moves around but he has a lot to prove this year. Their corners aren't great in a division with some big, fast receivers.

I have to agree with you on the Ravens thing. They are always scary, even when when we should be able to count them out. But I caution everyone who thinks the steelers are redefining themselves. They did not throw out the old play book and start from scratch, they just added some more too it. Thats why I think they will do well, because they are just becoming a more complete offense than a year ago. Big Ben does have a lot to prove but I think he is up to the task if his 3 preseason passes were any indication. Regardless of how the Steelers or Ravens or Bengals do this year I know one thing for sure; the north is gonna be one tough division.

Agreed that this is probably one of the toughest divisions in football (AFC West also). Here are my predictions:

1 - Ravens - (11-5) - McNair must hold up or they may fall from this spot. 2 - Bengals - (10-6)- Too much firepower on O. Can they stop the run? 3 - Steelers - (7-9) - Omar Epps, I mean Mike Tomlin, will struggle at first and the team will finish strong.

4 - Browns - (4-12) - Garbage...

I think a lot of people put too much faith in what other sports writers are saying around the league about these teams in general. Sounds like you are regurgitating what trash illiterate sports writers are saying, but it is after all your opinion, and pick it apart I shall.

My predictions followed by my reasoning:

1. To discredit the Browns and say 4-12, garbage, etc..., is utter nonsense, watch out for them as any they are an NFL team that is hungry for a winning season. Did we already forget they did after pump put a ton of talent on the offensive line. The defense is what is going to be their determining factor along with the QB situation. Romeo Crennel WILL NOT be fired. Tie for third place on the upswing, if Steelers are in trouble with the new head coach, then it will be a three way tie for second.

2. The Steelers are going to be the Steelers, a tough grid-iron team that can crush playoff hopes year after year. But Cowher was their glue and he is gone. Tomlin is in need of showing what his worth is as a coach, and if training camp is any factor, then they may be headed for a meltdown within the team corps. If he pans out, then this is a team that will be alone in the positional race for second.

3. Cincy, you said it all.

4. Baltimore, division winners, hands down. Absolutely scary as has been accurately coined and with they have added Willis McGahee to replace Jamal, they will be dominant with their offense once again. I did not mention the defense and Brian Billick; enough said.

errr..they have had a great training camp. The D has been amazing..the O has some problems along the line but nothing they can't work out. Ben is going to have a big year with the new Arians offense. They still have a great running game, special teams will be great (the new punter is Ray Guy the 2nd and Tomlin is obsessesd with ST details.

Overall, they are definately a wild card candidate as they have solid credentials in every category..the Defense, Offense and the Special Teams. I think Baltimore has to be the favourite as their D is probably the best in the division and perhaps in the NFL. McNair has to have a great year though.

I don't see Cincy making it. The D is not up to standard and they will have to score their way to the playoffs. I don't see it happening.

Cleveland is Cleveland until they prove differently.

Good column, I don't believe in Steve McNair or the one and done ravens. The bengals always find a way to mess up and the browns aren't consistent enough to win. The steelers will take the division. Bob R

The Steelers will take the division this year.

Reason's why:

1. The Bengals do not have the defense to help out that very dangerous offense.

2. The Ravens' Steve Mcnair will be injured sometime during the season. (I hope he doesn't, but last year was the only season he's had where he hasn't been injured)

3. The Ravens' offensive line will not be completely healthy at any point this season.

4. The Ravens' defense will run out of gas by mid-November.

5. The Steelers defense is young and will take a few weeks to adjust to Lebeau's scheme, but look at the early schedule the Steelers have, they should be heading into the bye week with one loss.

6. The Steelers have the weapons i.e. QB, WR's, pass catching TE's, and RB's that can catch the ball out of the backfield to go to a spread offense. My only concern is can the Offensive line, can they protect the QB long enough to do this as often as they are talking about doing this.

There is no way in hell the "Squealers" will win the Division. Nor the Bungles, or that other puke colored team. GO RAVENS!
