USA Baseball today announced the roster for the team which will represent the United States in the Beijing Olympic Games later this summer. Manager Dave Johnson, who led USA Baseball to its first World Cup Gold Medal in thirty seven years this past Novemeber, ironically also in China, will lead the Olympic squad as well. Johnson, who has World Series rings as both a player and manager, along with USA general manager Bob Watson, used the Futures Game this past weekend as a final assessment on some of the top players under consideration. From a preliminary roster of sixty, Team USA will take a roster of twenty-four to China, with the US scheduled to begin play on August 13th vs. Korea.

USA! USA! USA!
USA! USA! USA!

Johnson's staff, which has remained intact since the 2005 World Cup, will accompany the team to China and includes Marcel Lachemann, (pitching coach), and Reggie Smith, (hitting coach/first base coach). The remainder are Rick Eckstein (third base coach), and auxiliary coaches Dick Cooke and Rolando de Armas.

Eligibility for consideration is any active professional player not currently on an active, twenty-five Major League Roster. Fourteen of the twenty-four players are currently on Triple A rosters, with others selected from lower minor league classifications and the amateur USA Junior National Team.

The U.S. is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2000, as they didn't qualify in 2004. Previous results have been; fourth, (1992), bronze, (1996), and gold, (2000).

In a seperate announcement, USA Baseball announced Florida State University catcher Buster Posey has been named winner of the 2008 Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the top amateur player in the country. Posey was selected out of a final group of five players, including pitchers Brian Matusz (University of San Diego), and Aaron Crow,(University of Missouri) and infielders Gordon Beckham, (University of Georgia) and Brett Wallace, (Arizona State University).

Is it the IOC or MLB who decided that USA could only select non-MLB players?

Awesome...

I was just thinking about this the other night, when all of the players in the Home Run Derby were American, and I thought, wait, who goes to the Olympics for us? These guys obviously don't, because they're in the middle of the season.

Interesting...during the Premier League season in England, many players left the club teams to go play in the Africa Cup and other international tournaments, and the clubs simply brought up another player from the youth system until the tournament was over. Basically, it would be equivalent to a bunch of minor leaguers in the Bigs for three weeks every four years.

The Africa Cup of Nations is a FIFA sanctioned tournament. Given that, clubs have no choice but to release their players to their respective national teams. FIFA is perhaps the strongest of all the governing bodies in sport. I do not think that MLB would listen to whatever the world governing body in baseball would say in regards to releasing players to their national teams. I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

It goes along with the American mentality. Everywhere but America, everybody grows up with the aim of playing for your country in whatever sport you choose to play in. In the USA, that isn't the case. That's why the USA fields teams that aren't at full strength. In Athens 2004, half of a potential US team frankly couldn't be bothered to turn up. The NHL has said it will not give one extra day off the schedule for the Winter Olympics. MLB frankly doesn't give a monkeys about the Olympics. In 2012, baseball is dropped though (rightly, in my opinion), so there's no need to worry about it anymore.

So if I read your comment correctly Alex I take it that NHL players will no longer participate in the Olympics. If that is the case then the NHL and IIHF need to revive the World Cup of Ice Hockey. Seeing the best players play for their countries is a tremendous thing.

No - the NHL is a wonderful exception. They're prepared to stop the NHL season for two weeks, but the players would prefer three, to give them two or three days beforehand and afterward to get over jetlag/adjusted to the time zone (if not held outside of North America).

I thought the Olympics were supposed to be for amateur athletes, Alex?

Not anymore, amateurism requirements have been dropped for most Olympic sports since the 1980s, boxing being on of the exceptions.

They were pretty much forced too, because Swimming and Athletics were becoming professional, and since they are two of the biggest Olympic sports in terms of medals, they had no choice really.

This team has a lot on it's collective shoulders, given that they didn't even qualify in 2004. They have to at least medal. It's the U.S. team in baseball for chrissakes!

The Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Chicago Cubs, completing an "upset" (for lack of a better word). It was their first postseason sweep since 1963. L.A. is advancing to the NLCS to play against the Philadelphia Phillies thanks to the tremendous arm of Hiroki Kuroda and James Loney's two-run double in the first.
