Torii Hunter: The 21st Century Jackie Robinson

Much like Jackie Robinson, Torii Hunter has been ill-treated by opposing fans.
Much like Jackie Robinson, Torii Hunter has been ill-treated by opposing fans.

When Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers broke major league baseball’s color barrier back in 1947, he experienced harassment at the hands of both players and fans. In one game against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 22, several Phillies players called Jackie a “nigger” from their dugout, and yelled that he should “go back to the cotton fields.” On road trips across N.L. cities, opposing fans would curse and spit on Jackie.

After sixty-one years since Robinson broke the color barrier, it would be reasonable to assume that the harassment of players and racial slurs would have ended by now. However, such is not the case at Fenway Park where Angels outfielder Torii Hunter has experienced abject racism over the course of his major league career. In an interview with the Riverside Press-Enterprise before the start of a series at Fenway Park this past week, Torii explained how he’d been treated during earlier trips to Boston.

“My first five or six (years), I was ‘That N-word.’ Some people would chant that out, some people would throw beer or whatever . . . batteries.”

As a baseball fans and Americans this is an embarrassment to us all. I generally do not have a big problem with fans booing selfish players and bigots such as Barry Bonds and John Rocker, but harassing the good-guys like Hunter because of his race is completely unacceptable.

This is one of many reasons why the West Coast is a better place to watch a baseball game.

That may be so, but every city has the drunken, idiotic fans that really don't respect the game and its players. Don't let the few rotten apples spoil the entire dozen

I really had no idea this was happening to Torii. That's awful. But I have to believe (or at least I'd like to think) the few douchebag Red Sox fans are in the minority (no pun intended) of baseball fans. Calling Torii the Jackie Robinson of the 21st century is a stretch, though. The racism is still there, as Torii has pointed out, but it's not nearly the level of what it was back when Robinson broke the color barrier.

for the record, Hunter is rich and famous. He can stay with his teammates. He wasn't brought into the league because he was the best black player that wouldn't fight back when experiencing racism. He could travel with his teammates in comfort that he could enjoy the same experiences they did. In fact, he probably has it better on the road in terms of what he has available then what some of his teammates have. I love hunter, but he is in no way anywhere near Jackie Robinson

B/C the West Coast is a little more laid back than the East Coast. The booing, drinking, and abuse are far less frequent.

As far as East Coast vs. West Coast, why does one experience have to be better than the other? It's baseball. We love baseball. They're just different experiences. Personally, I like it rough, but that's just me and that's what I grew up with.

Plus, who knows how many other players experience this type of thing, and just aren't saying anything? I know Barry Bonds spoke out a few years ago about how he'd never play in Boston because it's a racist city (he said it, not me). Torii, unfortunately, is probably not the only one. Just because he's good and chose to speak his mind about the issue doesn't make him anymore Robinson-esque (in your view) than any other black baseball player in the majors.

"After sixty-one years since Robinson broke the color barrier, it would be reasonable to assume that the harassment of players and racial slurs would have ended by now."

Get a couple of years out in the real world off of the West Coast and you will see that expecting NO idiots to remain after 61 years is pretty surreal. Torri is a GREAT athlete and when idiots have nothing left to trash you with, they will stoop to the LCD (Lowest Common denominator) which is picking on someones race. Many people aren't as "progressive" as we liken ourself to be on the west coast (and we aren't as "progressive" as we liken ourselves either).

The first way to deal with race is to admit that race is still an issue.

Also, Torri Hunter is NO Jackie Robinson. He may catch shit out in the field and have a lot of dumb things said to try and hurt him; but Torri will admit himself he hasn't touched what Jackie did for our people, not even 1/10. Torri would probably be a little incensed as a black man to be put in Jackie's class, deserved or not because Jackie means so much to the Culture. Before there was MLK or Malcom X or Geronimo Pratt there were Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson, two men who are truly immortal in not just the Black American community but in America in general.

Black/White American race issues will never end for two reasons:
  • This nation was economically built on the back of slavery.
  • There will always be Black "civil rights leaders/activist" who will attempt to make money off of race and race war mongering.

2a: There will always be people like Rev. Jeremiah Wright who perpetuate ill-will and hate based on lies and misconceptions.

As long as there are blacks who try to make money off of race there will be a problem and as long as whites try to pretend that race issues don't exist there will be a problem.

Yes you could be Michael Carrick and get back 10 million pounds to suck at your job, woe is you...

I'm just telling it how it is. Shit, I'm still racist as hell. When I get on a plane I do keep my eyes peeled for shady middle eastern people. When I hear of illegal immigrant gang members killing innocent Americans I get heated and think some illogical stuff. But I'm not scared to admit it, I am flawed, and I am partly conditioned by media and culture to expand on those thoughts.

But the first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one, then trying to figure out how to improve upon it.

I'm racist too. Not on the same level as guys who yell the N word at Torii Hunter, but I laugh at jokes about terrorists and Mexicans, and I'll sometimes cross the street if it's late and there's a black guy walking behind me. It's still a problem in the US. Being in London, where so many different kinds of people live, has changed me. I'm more open minded and it's probably the best thing I can say about my experience here.

Meg, that's what I enjoy about living in Sydney as well, particularly at the school I teach, where about 80 different countries are represented out of 450 boys, the majority of whom are Middle Eastern, Asian or Pacific Islander, although all six inhabited continents are represented. Whenever I hear someone from the US talking about Muslims, the first thing I do is ask them if they actually know anyone who is Muslim. So far, the answer has been no every time. I'm also guessing that you have experienced much greater exposure to true world news, not just world news as it relates to the US (read: Iraq). When I was back in the US at Christmas for two weeks, I really missed that. Not to mention that none of my friends or family knew much about current world issues. Lack of world exposure makes us myopic.

Very good article written by L.Z Granderson.

I'm still absolutely frustrated by the state of race in this country. Especially in the criminal justice system. On Friday, {I don't know if you guys have heard of this} they just let three police officers off who shot and killed a black man named Sean Bell and wounded 2 of his friends with a grand total of 50 gunshots despite the fact they were unarmed. Two of the police officers were black and the other was white {Not that it matters} And you know what the sad thing is? I predicted they would let them off. In turn, this made me very bitter. Not just because it happened to my own, but that it will continue to further divide all of us racially as a society. I hope for the day when racism would be nothing more than a memory, but crap like this moves us two steps backward.

I'm not familiar with the Bell story, but I don't care what race the victims or the shooters were. When cops are firing 50... 50 shots (or however many more then 1) at unarmed citizens we have serious issues in our law enforcement system, period. Anytime law enforcement feels the need to shoot multiple rounds when there is no clear or present threat presented to their wellbeing it's time to figure out what makes them lash out; doesn't matter if they are black, white, latino, indigo, forest green or hobbit.

I have been to a couple of minor league games in Kodak, Tennessee where the Tennessee Smokies play and I noticed there were very few black players in the games. There may be black athletes who would make great baseball players but because they are not in a place where there is no baseball fields or organized leagues they may never be able to use that talent.
