BigPPup
AGM Linebacker and I will bring the pain.

I'm a sports fanatic. I hail from Nelson County Virginia, and thats where I learned to be a Virginia Cavalier fan. I also learned to be a Dallas Cowboys fan because I hated how good the Redskins were doing. I've played sports at almost every level with the exception of being a fulltime professional, as a result I have a great perception on the sporting world. I love to talk sports and I've never been shy to share my opinion with someone.

The Open Saved Summer Sports, and In a Way It Saved Walker's Rants

Okay never thought I would say this but thank God for golf.  The Open honestly saved my summer sports experience and I could not be happier.  Summer can be draining on a sports fan, but football training camp has started, and the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel.  Just hang in there a couple more days it is almost time to rejoice.

Oklahoma City Thunder?  That’s terrible…

The Ashley Harkleroad layout is actually well done…

Danica Patrick is great for Indy car…

Greg Norman proved you cannot teach old dog new tricks…

Greg Norman put on an amazing performance this weekend, and I’m so happy to have been able to witness it…

Jason Taylor is a Redskin, still not changing my prediction for the Skins…

They don’t need to do anything to change the All-Star game its fine the way it is…

Congrats Chris Long for getting your deal signed and getting to camp on time…

Padraig Harrington the two time Open champion that will never get the credit he is due…

There was seriously a soccer brawl in the U.S?  That’s just sad…

The ESPY’s may be the dumbest idea in sports history…

Never thought I’d actually be sick of Brett Favre…

ESPN 980 sucks never let your radio station get sold to the empire…

James Posey is not worth all that money, lets be honest…

Jeremy Shockey will help the Saints offense and I think he will enjoy life on Bourbon Street…

The Virginia Cavaliers will beat USC and make a Bowl game this year…

Chad Johnson has already declared that he will cause some trouble this season. Watch out Cincinnati…

The Olympics are right around the corner… yay… I think…

How bout that made it through an entire Walker’s Rants and didn’t have to mention baseball.  Got to love that…

It's actually been a jam-packed summer for us. We had Wimbledon, Federer v Nadal was a classic. Euro 2008 was a big deal, too. The Olympics coming up will have blanket coverage on the BBC. The Open threatened to be lost in a summer of big events, but Greg Norman managed to keep it alive in people's minds. Also, kudos for calling it "The Open", and not "British Open".

1) greg norman was always a choker so you are correct, won't be learning any new tricks anytime soon

2) they definitely need to at least change it so pitchers who pitched the sunday before the all-star break are not on the active roster. You don't need pitchers getting hurt for an exhibition game and you don't need pitchers on the roster who the managers don't want to use.

3) Posey is definitely not worth the money, but more power to him for getting it. maybe he can have some man love for CP3 this year.

4) the all-star game is baseball isn't it?

Yeah, the summer just has not done it for me. I am not a tennis fan so while feder vs. Nadal looked good it didnt scratch the itch I had to see pain. Euro Cup was fun as well, but again same thing. The Olympics just bore me now, and I know that we will hear 9 million doping scandals in the next month. Norman did not choke away the Open on Sunday. The man is a part time golfer who went out to play in the Open on his Honeymoon. He had no business being there and damn near won it all.

What Norman did trumps Tiger at the "US" Open. Woods blows his knee 11 months ago, and it's news now? How many tournaments he win before, six or seven? Why didn't he have the surgery when he first hurt it?

He may have facked his own career, and for what?

Norman doesn't even practice much anymore. His new goal is to beat his wife at tennis. And if you know anything about golf, you would be aware the British Open is without question the hardest tournament of the four majors. They don't trick up the courses, grow stupid rough, lengthen the tees, make rock hard greens, they just play the course naturally. Let the enviornment determine quality of play.

For Norman to be even in the last group on Sunday was miraculous in itself, if he had won the tournament, it would have become legendary.

I admire Tiger as much as the next guy, but he's the only athlete in the world with a TV station designed to kiss his ass, and it's getting to the point I can't watch the endless sucking anymore. Johnny Miller is right, everyone playing golf today owes a debt to Tiger, when he's finished, just like Hogan followed Jones, and Arnie followed Hogan and Jack followed Arnie and Watson followed Jack, someone will follow Tiger, and life and golf will go on.

What Greg Norman did for 3 days is pretty remarkable, but then he's leading the open and shoots a PLUS SEVEN in the last round. This after not having shot more then a 72 any of the previous days. To me that sounds like choking under the pressure.

That's more remarkable then winning the US Open on messed up knee and leg??? (which he made worse in the tournament) That's more remarkable then sinking tieing putt on the last hole of a Major Championship?

If that's the case i guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Norman had no business even being in the group on Sunday. He had no business in the top 5 10 or 20 The fact that he made the cut was amazing. I mean honestly think about the oldest man to win a major is Jack at 46, Norman is 53. I dont know if what he did was more impressive than Tiger, I honestly see it as something very different. There's no real good way to quantify defying age. I mean you cant block the pain, or ignore the pain. Hell theres no real pain its just being old.

Actually BigPPup, the oldest man to win a major is 48, it wasn't Jack Nicklaus at the '86 Masters, it was the '68 PGA or something.

For Norman to have won The Open Championship, he'd have had to shoot 70 in the last round, which was as good as he'd done in the rest of the week. 71 to force a playoff. Harrington shot 69 in the final round to beat him, which given that only a handful of rounds all week were under 70 (par for the course), was a brilliant achievement. There was no way that Norman was going to shoot 70 on the last day. Harrington won The Open, rather than Norman lost it, and I think Norman realised that.

As for the course, as Kelsdad said, The Open is the best major championship, because it doesn't have to have 525 yard par 4 holes to make it difficult. Because we hold it on a links, we can rely on the wind and possible rain to make it challenging. That's the problem with golf in America, you don't have the weather to make it difficult. Even Pebble Beach isn't a true links in that the wind never gets up to what it can do/does on a British links. That's why the USGA has to make courses stupidly long to stop players going too far under par. The only criticism of the course that I had was the 6th hole. It was 499 yards, and used to be a par 5, but for The Open, it became a par 4. It was into the wind all week, and nobody could reach it in 2. So, the R&A brought the tees forward 20 yards. They did that on a number of holes that were unplayable due to the wind. The 6th should be a par 5 anyway, it was never designed as a 4. Apart from that, the course was magnificant, a true test of links golf. Nobody complained about it, in contrast to the courses used for the three majors held in the US in recent times.

Another little fact, Norman isn't the oldest to finish third in a major. Sam Snead managed to finish fourth, ninth and third between 1972 and 1974 at the PGA Championship, i.e. between the ages of 60 and 62! Other good performances from old players that I can think of - Jack Nicklaus finished 6th in The Masters at the age of 56 in 1996.

I actually enjoyed the EPSYs, from what I saw of it. I mean, sure, there's the usual sycophantic acceptance speeches (after all, it is an awards show), but I thought that Justin Timberlake was very funny and that Will Ferrell accepting Tiger's Best Male Athlete Award was classic.

Agreed. And I loved the commercial too. John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell! ("I wanna play Tiger Woods... 18 holes... on the moon... I've seen the commercial, so don't tell me you can't do it.") And BigPPup, I'm happy and disappointed at the same time about that last sentence in your article. I'm glad that you can not rant about baseball for an article. However, I'm disappointed that you didn't.
